Matted, glazed and framed. sight 4-1/2" x 5-1/4", framed 9-3/4" x 10-1/4" Provenance: Estate of Lin Emery, New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: The charismatic and engaging artist, curator, and gallery owner, George Febres was an active contributor in the resurgence of New Orleans as a regional art center of the 1970s. Born in Ecuador, Febres emigrated to New Orleans in 1965 and despite not graduating from high school was accepted in the art programs at University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University. Febres curated exhibitions at the newly opened Contemporary Art Center and eventually opened the Galerie Jules Laforgue in the Faubourg Marigny. In his artwork, Febres created surrealistic visual puns often embedded with humor and autobiographical references. "The basis of everything I do is a good drawing," Febres said. "I do a drawing a day." Known for his long full head of hair, the 1988 drawing entitled "Nostalgia" references the 1960s with a view of the back of his head wearing a bandana head band.
