      • Fauzin Mustafa (b. 1966) Eclipse Throughout The Night #4, 2001
        Aug. 25, 2024

Fauzin Mustafa (b. 1966) Eclipse Throughout The Night #4, 2001

        Est: RM10,000 - RM18,000

An eclipse is a mesmerising celestial event that occurs during an alignment of earth, the Sun and the Moon. Eclipse Throughout The Night #4 consists of circular forms intercepted with natural shapes such as leaves, complemented with strips which gives the surface a tactile quality. Through his refined application of tonal values, he has created segmented shapes which reflect the mesmerising glow of the eclipse. Fauzin won the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman) competition in 1988. He picked up the Minor Award (Painting) in the Salon Malaysia in 1991, 3rd Prize in the Philip Morris Asean Art Award - Malaysia (1994), 2nd Prize for the Mekarcitra competition at Galeri Shah Alam (2007), and the Major Award in the 1MC mural painting at National Art Gallery (2010). He took part in the Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh (2001) and the New Art from Southeast Asia in Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1992). A full time artist since 2008, Fauzin was Media Prima's Head of Set Design, Make-up and Wardrobe (2000-2008), senior art director (1998-2000), and art director for TV3 (1990-1998). In 1996, he won Best Set Design for TV3 Screen Awards. He graduated with a MFA (2010) and a BFA (1988) from the University ITM. His third solo, Life Between The Dots, was held at Core Design Gallery, Selangor (2017).

FAUZIN MUSTAFA : Eclipse - Throughout the Night, 2001

        Est: RM15,000 - RM25,000

Fauzin Mustaffa defined his artistic repertoire early, beginning with the ‘mixed media’ theme of the Young Contemporaries Competition in 1987. That same year, with a group of like-minded individuals (Hasnul J Saidon, Mohd Noor Mahmud, and Taufik Abdullah), Fauzin exhibited mixed media works under the joint title 4 Persepsi. The group’s goals were simple: to challenge the conventional rules regarding painting (and art of the time). The exhibition came as a result of the group’s efforts – producing set designs - for the Centrestage Theatre group (years later, another young group of artists, Matahati, would follow this same path).

Silent Growth Series – VII represents the artist's exploration of nature achieved through rich colours, texture, and space. Est: RM17,000 - RM30,000

Thick impastoed configurations characterize Fauzin Mustafa’s works at this time. Semangat Bumi Series, coming just before the Lost Horizon Series, treads the same path about the beauty of Nature which could turn ferociously ugly in seconds if steps are not taken to preserve the natural environment. Fauzin plays with Shaped Canvas ala Frank Stella and surface tensions, usually monochromatic or with floral designs. A work from the Lost Horizon Series (1996) measuring 183cm x 183cm sold at the Henry Butcher April 23, 2017, auction for a premium of RM39,200. This work was featured in Fauzin’s first solo, Dari Bumi Ke Bumi, at the National Art Gallery’s Creative Centre, Kuala Lumpur. • FAUZIN MUSTAFA (b. 1966) UNTITLED (THE LOST HORIZON SERIES), 1996, Mixed media on canvas
        Apr. 23, 2017

FAUZIN MUSTAFA (b. 1966) UNTITLED (THE LOST HORIZON SERIES), 1996, Mixed media on canvas

        Est: RM35,000 - RM55,000

When Fauzin Mustafa unleashed his Lost Horizon Series in 1994, it generated great interest over his slab-like painting with Malay symbolic patterns and designs studded with dots all over. It was in his first solo exhibition, Dari Bumi Ke Bumi, at the National Art Gallery’s Creative Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Several others like Akif Emir Teruki had also started using symbols such as the Spiral and the Tree of Life, especially after the 1971 National Cultural Congress. One work from the series that caught the eye was Misteri Alam: Lubok Mandi (1989), about the April 29, 1989, gold-panning tragedy when nine panners were killed in a tunnel landslide from tunneling and deforestation. The mining area spread over a 180-hectare pit site in Lubuk Mandi in Marang. The first gold, however, came only in 2015 and it was found to be of ’90 to 99’ quality grade. The panners then were using hoes, pan buckets and even their bare hands. Fauzin took the incident as a cautionary tale of Man’s greed for money and despoiling the natural environment. He was winning prestigious awards with his own style: Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artist (BMS) competition (1988); Minor Award (Painting) in the Salon Malaysia in 1991; 3rd Prize in the Philip Morris Asean Art Award – Malaysia (1994), and an Honourable Mention in the finals in Singapore. He continued his winning streak with 2nd Prize for the Mekarcitra Visual Arts competiton at the Shah Alam Gallery (2007); and Major Award, 1MC mural painting, National Art Gallery (2010). He took part in the Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh (2001), New Art from South-east Asia in Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1992), Art Triangle (2007 and 2008), and the Art Expo Malaysia in 2009 (Malaysian Art Idols) and 2014 (Great Malaysian Contemporary Art). He has gone fulltime since 2008. His latest solo, Life Between The Dots, at Core Design Gallery, Selangor, this year. He worked in television and was Media Prima’s head of Set Design, Make-up and Wardrobe (2000-2008) , senior art director (1998-2000), and art director for TV3 (1990-1998). In 1996, he won Best Set Design for TV3 Screen Awards. He graduated with a MFA (2010) and a BFA (1988) from the University ITM.
