        Fauzan Omar (b. 1951) Untitled, 1990s

        Est: RM28,000 - RM50,000

Fauzan Omar's work features the wondrous beauty of natural forms. Working primarily with mixed media, his iconic paintings utilise strips of torn canvas applied with paint to create incredibly textured and relief images. His assemblages of patterns create a strong impact through the deconstruction of canvas which is then transformed into his artistic forms. On a deeper level his work puts forward questions of sustainability, human consumption and the depletion of natural resources. In this set of works, a multitude of delicate forms are created in a predominantly earthy palette. Fauzan Omar holds a Diploma in Art and Design from Universiti Teknologi Mara and a Masters Degree in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Arts, United States of America. He has exhibited locally and internationally since 1980 and has influenced a generation of Malaysian artists as an art educator from the 1980s to the 1990s. From early on in his career he was selected to represent Malaysia in Contemporary Asian Art Show at the Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan (1980); Asean Exhibition, Kuala Lumpur (1981); and India Fifth Triennial, New Delhi (1982). He has also participated in significant exhibitions such as Modernity and Beyond, Themes in Southeast Asian Art, Singapore Art Museum (1996) and at the second Asia-Pacific Triennial, Queensland Art Gallery, Australia (1996). His solo exhibitions include Rejuvenation (2005), Resonance (2007), and Come July till October: Aftermath of Fury (2013).

        Est: RM18,000 - RM25,000

FAUZAN OMAR : Pemandangan Negara, 1987

        Est: RM10,000 - RM16,000

Hailing from Kelantan, Fauzan Omar received his Master in Fine Art (Paintings) from the Maryland College Institute of Art, Baltimore, Maryland, United States in 1984. Prior to that, he obtained a diploma in art teaching (ATD) from Institut Teknologi MARA (now UiTM), Shah Alam, Selangor in 1974. Environmental issues have always been his concern, harking back to the days as a youth living in the suburbs, occasionally encountering that unexpected bloom that graces the mid-morning air. Reminiscing them, Fauzan is greatly affected by the progressive changes he observes. His works re-interpret the issues of forest fires, haze, and overdevelopment by depicting the resilience of people who were tested under such tragic and harsh living conditions. He also uses the collage technique in search of the meaning of materiality as well as the intertwining relations between natural beings and human creation.

“My scope of interest is strictly confined to nature. The manifestation of my art is all about nature.” - Fauzan Omar Having practised art professionally for over 30 years, Fauzan Omar constantly explores new ways to convey his concerns about the decay of nature through his mixed media paintings. Executed in the early Nineties, Unity & Diversity depicts Fauzan’s initial endeavour in immortalising the beauty of tree barks and dried foliage. Fauzan places a layer of canvas on top of another and begins the process of carving the top to reveal the layer underneath. This technique brings out the texture and form of the outermost layers of stems and roots of woody plants. Fauzan Omar attended Maryland College Institute of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, USA from 1982 to 1984 and attained Master of Fine Arts (Paintings). In 1995, he won two awards: Australian Cultural Awards from the International Cultural Relations Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia; and Major Award from the Philip Morris Art Competition, at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. His solo exhibitions include Bracing The Heat (2018) at The Edge Galerie, Kuala Lumpur, Hazardous Beauty (2017) at Wei-Ling Contemporary, Kuala Lumpur and Recent Paintings By Fauzan Omar at the Australian High Commission, Kuala Lumpur (1991), among others. Recently-retired art educationist Fauzan Omar is currently devoting his time to create artworks. He was a fine art lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
