Louis Francois Sebastian Fauvel (French, 1753-1838) Portrait of a Turkish man in a ceremonial costume Watercolor over black chalk on laid paper laid down on paper 7-1/2 x 4-3/4 inches (19.1 x 12.1 cm) Signed and inscribed lower right: Fauvel fecit PROPERTY FROM A NEW YORK ESTATE PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, New York, January 24, 2007, lot 108. The two watercolors of a Turkish man and woman by Fauvel in the present sale were presumably made in Smyrna (modern day Izmir), where the artist died. He was following in the footsteps of the gifted watercolorist Liotard, who had enjoyed tremendous success producing portraits of the Dutch community there a century earlier. HID01801242017
