Frauen und Männer in für die damalige Zeit typischer Kleidung drängen sich an den Bildrändern, werden seitlich präsentiert wie eine Kulisse, die uns die unbestrittenen Protagonisten des Bildes vorstellt. In der Mitte der Komposition, an die Trapezstruktur gelehnt, ein fliederfarbener angezogener Clown mit geschminktem Gesicht, er wendet seinen Rücken den jungen Frauen zu und grinst in einer spielerisch beleidigen Grimasse. Hinter ihm unterhalten fröhliche Spielerinnen die Zuschauer mit einer musikalischen Show. Im Hintergrund ein Waldrand, der nur vom funkelnden Rot des Zirkuswagens unterbrochen wird. Faure suchte sich oft Theater- und Zirkusszenen als Thematik seiner Kunst aus, er malte auch zahlreiche Blumenstillleben und Innenräume mit Figuren. Dabei hat sie ihren Kopf auf ihre linke Hand abgestützt und blickt mit ihren dunklen Augen und den wohlgeformten Augenbrauen leicht schmunzelnd aus dem Bild heraus. Hinter ihr auf dem Bett ein Mann, der ihre rechte Hand berührt und sie liebevoll anblickt. Links und rechts des Bettes jeweils zwei weitere Frauen mit dunklen Haaren und Ohrringen, die interessiert den Avancen des Mannes beiwohnen. Am rechten unteren Rand ein großer bauchiger Krug.
