    FAULKNER WILLIAM: (1897-1962)

    Est: €600 - €800

FAULKNER WILLIAM: (1897-1962) American writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1949. D.S., William Faulkner, one page, 4to, n.p. (Los Angeles, California), 16th August 1943. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, states, in part, 'I, William Faulkner, hereby certify that I wrote, created and composed and/or collaborated in the writing…..of the screen play entitled ''De Gaulle Story'' and/or ''Free French'' based on the life of Charles De Gaulle and the Free French movement and the original dialogue used therein, as an employee of Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc., pursuant to an agreement of employment dated July 27, 1942, in performance of my duties thereunder and in the regular course of my employment; and that said Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. is the author and entitled to the copyright and all other rights…..' Countersigned at the foot by a Notary Public alongside their blind embossed seal. Rare. One small file hole to the upper left corner, a small minor tear to the right edge, and some very minor, light creasing, otherwise VG It was American President Franklin D. Roosevelt who had originally mooted the idea of a glorifying biopic of Charles de Gaulle and the Free French to Jack Warner, as he wanted to bolster de Gaulle's reputation. Warner passed the concept off to Faulkner the day that the writer arrived at the Warner Bros. studios. Unfortunately, Faulkner got caught up in an arduous series of edits on The De Gaulle Story (1942) in an effort to please de Gaulle's Hollywood consultant, Henri Diamant-Berger, who went to lengths to point out the script's flaws and inaccuracies in regard to French custom and the heroism of de Gaulle. When Faulkner had completed the script to Diamant-Berger's liking, the studio made the decision to shelve the project.

FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). The Sound and the Fury & As I Lay Dying. New York: The Modern Library, 1946. A presentation copy inscribed to his longtime friend: “To Phil Stone from Bill Faulkner.” Phil Stone (1893-1967) and William Faulkner both hailed from Oxford, Mississippi, where they met during the summer of 1914. Stone, a law student, quickly became the younger man’s close friend and confdant; older by four years and outgoing, he was “uniquely ftted to serve as William Faulkner’s friend and mentor. He was a compulsive talker, a man who loved to teach and tell stories. Moved by impulses toward literary creation but lacking the drive to carry them through to fruition, he could satisfy them only vicariously. He would later say of himself, ‘I’m like an elaborate, intricate piece of machinery which doesn’t quite work’” (Blotner 44). As they grew older, Stone encouraged his friend’s literary interests: his secretaries typed Faulkner’s early work and he personally paid for the fne press publication of The Marble Faun, Faulkner’s frst book. In turn, Faulkner would dedicate the three books of the Snopes Trilogy to Stone, and base characters on both Stone and his family. The lawyer Gavin Stevens, a major character in Intruder in the Dust and Knight’s Gambit, was based upon him. The present copy is from the frst Modern Library edition. Octavo (176 x 115). Original cloth (some soiling); dust jacket (lower cover panel separated, some wear to extremities); in a custom slipcase. Provenance: Philip Avery Stone (1893-1967; inscription).

FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). A Fable. New York: Random House, 1954. “The best work of my life”: a presentation copy of the frst edition, inscribed, “To Mother with love / Billy.” Additionally signed on the title page and dated about two months prior to publication: “William Faulkner Oxford Miss 10 June 1954.” While the previous decade had found Faulkner mostly out-of-print, the 1946 publication of Malcolm Cowley’s The Portable Faulkner introduced his work to a whole new readership and brought the critical and popular acclaim that had eluded him. Although A Fable was received with mixed reviews, Faulkner considered it his masterpiece, and it won him his frst Pulitzer Prize (he would win a second for The Reivers in 1963). He wrote in 1953, “Am just fnishing what I think is the best work of my life and maybe of my time, a book, novel, fable” (Blotner 576). Here, he presents his great accomplishment to his mother, underscoring the depth of their relationship. Maud Butler Faulkner (1871-1960) by all accounts favored William, the eldest of her four sons, fostering his love of literature when he was young and nurturing his talent throughout his life. She was intensely devoted to him, and provided emotionally while he attempted to provide fnancially – though in most cases she declined his help. Massey 38. Octavo (201 x 103mm). FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). Light in August. New York: Harrison Smith

    Est: $25,000 - $35,000

FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). Light in August. New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. The frst edition of one of Faulkner’s greatest novels, meaningfully inscribed to a close childhood friend: “For Myrtle Ramey / Oxford Miss 30 May 1934 / William Faulkner.” Faulkner had few grade school friends, but Myrtle Ramey was certainly one of them. They met in third grade, and though she was a fragile girl who was only permitted to attend school part-time, Faulkner met her delicate nature with kindness and compassion. They shared a love of literature, and beginning with The Marble Faun in 1924, she was one of a very select few to whom he sent copies of his books. Perhaps tellingly, despite Ramey’s marriage in 1926, the majority of his inscriptions persisted in using her maiden name. Light in August has taken its place as not only one of Faulkner’s masterpieces but one of the great novels of the 20th century. Indeed, the “fne galloping language” that “begins to swim smooth and swift and peaceful” that he ascribes to a main character’s beloved volume of Tennyson’s poetry also describes his own writing. Massey 103. Octavo (202 x 135mm). Original cloth stamped in orange and blue, top edge orange (light ofsetting from jacket fap to front endpaper); orange and blue printed dust-jacket (very light wear along top edge); remnants of glassine; in a custom quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Myrtle Ramey (inscription) – Louis Daniel Brodsky – Christie’s New York, 2 December 2005, lot 69, $31,200).

WILLIAM FAULKNER LETTER - Extremely scarce letter from author William Faulkner (1897-1962) in response to an Indiana University student, expounding for 2/3 of a page torn from a yellow pad, in his tiny handwriting, on the subject of LOVE! Includes the original envelope, postmarked from Oxford, Mississippi, dated March 28, 1950, along with an account of the receipt of the letter from a diary. The transcription is as follows: "What reporter? The only one I can think of in connection with my work is the one in Pylon. He had no name. He was not anonymous: he was every man. I think that every young man, no matter how ugly - dwarf, freak, cripple, halitosis, all - has once in him the capacity for one great love or sacrifice for love, to a loved one, a beloved. But most of us miss it. We are dumb ourselves, or fail to get it across, or we choose (if there is a choice). We marry one, either unworthy, or too big, too strong for us, out of our class anyway. Thats what he did. Tragic, sad, worse; but better than nothing. In fact, the best is not to be loved, but to love; if you have read far enough, you will remember another character of mine who said 'Between grief and nothing, I will take grief. Faulkner." The author of 'As I Lay Dying', 'The Sound and the Fury' and 'Absalom, Absalom!' was famously private and seldom expounded on the motivations for his work. This letter was published as part of "Selected Letters of William Faulkner", edited by Joseph Blotner, Random House, New York, 1977 (page 301) and in a limited edition (100 copies) monograph with intro by Richard Lyons, having an off-set copy of the original, by The Merrykit Press, Fargo, ND, July, 1974.

FAULKNER WILLIAM: (1897-1962) American Writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1949. Autograph Telegram Signed, BILL, in capital letters, one page, oblong 8vo, Paris, n.d. (c.1955?), to Howard Hawks in Cairo, Egypt. The partially printed telegram is neatly completed in ink by Faulkner, entirely in capital letters, and states, in full, 'Booked N.Y. 19 April unless I hear from you. Of course will stay here on call or meet you at need if notified tel no.' The writer has also penned his name ('WILLIAM FAULKNER') in ink at the base, along with his address at the Hotel de Beaujolais in Paris. A rare autograph with an interesting association. A couple of very small, extremely minor tears to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
