The festival began in 1926 when immigrants from Italy took to the streets to celebrate Saint Januarius the Patron Saint of Naples. At the end of the street, we can see the small chapel and saint that are erected every year for the festival.

A child of Italian immigrants, he spent his youth delivering ice with his father and enduring the harsh regimen of a Catholic reform school. During the Great Depression, Fasanella worked in garment factories and as a truck driver. A retrospective at the American Folk Art Museum in 2014 presented critics and the public with an opportunity to reassess Fasanella's art and its place in postwar American culture.
