      Robert Farrier,  Dressing Up

      Est: £150 - £200

These were popular and a number of them were engraved. One of his pictures, 'The Parting', was presented after his death to the South Kensington Museum [V&A Museum no.229-1879]. His sister, Charlotte Farrier (1796-1882), was also an artist. She had a large practice as a miniature-painter and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy.

The entry for this painting in the 1842 Royal Academy Exhibition catalogue is accompanied by the following unattributed poem, possibly by the artist himself: The broken moonbeam on the ripple plays; And many a cheerful burst of laughter rings Thro' the still ev'ning air, from jocund swains And village maidens blythe. Their simple revels How shall she join?--she slighted and alone? Swells the void heart and gently rise the tears, As, conscious of neglect and blank'd affection She views the happy pairs. C
