This is an oil on board by Jerry Farnsworth, a renowned portrait painter from Georgia. In the 1940’s he was Artist-in-Residence at the University of Illinois. He operated an art school with his wife in Truro, Massachusetts, and they wintered in Sarasota, Florida in the 1940’s and 50’s. He was considered the father figure of the Sarasota art colony; he would organize luncheons and meetings where local artists could gather. His works have been on Time Magazine; he was commissioned by Time to paint celebrities for their covers, including Hitler and Haile Selassie. He was commissioned to paint the portrait of President Truman and the President’s mother, and his works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York. He served in the Navy in World War I and it’s possible this painting might have been done while he was on leave in Europe. It depicts someone riding a bicycle through a town or village street, and the back of the painting is signed by Farnsworth and says “French Town” below the signature. It also has a stamp mark from Paris on the back of the painting. The overall size is 13 3/4 x 10 1/2 in. wide.
