Farington (Joseph) An album of 45 sketches in Scotland, [circa 1788-1801]

        Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Farington (Joseph, diarist and topographical artist, 1747-1821) An album of 45 sketches in Scotland, including views of Getna Green, Dumfries, Armisfield House, Loch House, Rae Hill, Bothwell Castle, Tolboth at Glasgow, and Dumbarton, among other locations, pencil, a few with monochrome wash, many signed and dated between '1788' and '1801' but most '1792', many with annotations and artists' notes, various sizes between 165 x 120 mm (6 1/2 x 4 3/4 in) and 255 x 155 mm (10 x 6 1/8 in), all neatly inset onto album leaves with ruled wash borders, some spotting and browning, occasional minor surface dirt, half calf, marbled boards, very rubbed and scuffed, worn, 4to, [c. 1788-1801] *** Farington undertook several tours of Scotland, including one in 1788, with the resulting compiled sketchbook from this tour now held in the Royal Collection [see RCIN 1145483]. While the majority of the drawings in the present album are dated 1792, some are slightly later and may include artworks from Farington's tour of 1802. On his return from this latter tour, Farington met with J.M.W. Turner for tea, where both men discussed Scotland; Farington noted that Turner '[...] shewed me his sketches made in Scotland. - Those made with Black Lead Pencil on white paper tinted with India Ink and Tobacco water and touched with liquid white of his own preparing, are much approved. - Turner thinks Scotland a more picturesque country to study in than Wales. The lines of the Mountains are finer, and the rocks of larger masses'. [The Diary of Joseph Farington, 1793-1821]

(41 1/2 x 59 1/2 in) Provenance: UK trade; from whom purchased by Mallett, 2008 Exhibited: His first picture exhibited at the Royal Academy 1778 Born at Leigh, Lancashire, Joseph was the elder brother of the historical painter George Farington. Joseph was a pupil of Richard Wilson, and from 1778 to 1813 he exhibited constantly at the Royal Academy. He was elected an Associate in 1783, and an Academician in 1785. He was also a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists. He pained many landscapes of Cumberland and Westmorlnd. He made a tour of Scotland and left a diary, which was edited by James Greig in 1923, and in Volume I of which this dinner-party list is noted: 'July 20 (1792) - At dinner there came Mr Hamilton Captain Gordon Captain Patrick Millar Mr Burns the Scottish Poet, at present an Exciseman in Dumfries, on £70 a year. He is married and has a dairy. He is a middle sized man about 36, black complexioned, and his general appearance that of a tradesman of mechanick. He has a strong expressive manner of delivering himself in conversation. He is not acquainted with the Latin language.' Farrington was an English landscape painter and topographical draughtsman and is chiefly remembered for his detailed diaries, which provide an invaluable insight into the London art world of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He was also influential in attracting tourists to the English Lake District in the early nineteenth century, as one of the group of artists which descended on the area at the time in search of the picturesque. His views of the Lakes were engraved and published in book form in 1789 and 1816.
