Born into a middle-class family in Besancon, Fanart left for Geneva in 1849 to study art, exhibiting there in 1854 before debuting at the Paris Salon in 1857. Politically active, he opposed the Second Empire via his newspaper Le Doubs and later served as the sub-prefect of Montbéliard in 1871. Settling back in Besançon, where he became a city councillor, Fanart founded the Musée du Palais Granvelle and the “Union Comtoise des Arts Décoratifs.” He passed away from heart disease on September 2, 1903, in the city of his birth. Today, his works are included in public collections such as the Dole Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology of Besancon.
