Luis Ricardo Falero Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1851 - d. 1896

Luis Ricardo Falero (May 23, 1851 – December 7, 1896), Duke of Labranzano, was a Spanish painter. He specialized in female nudes and mythological, orientalist and fantasy settings.[2] His most common medium was oil on canvas. Falero’s paintings are held mostly within private collections in Europe and the United States, although a watercolour of the ‘Twin Stars’ is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Falero was born in Granada and originally pursued a career in the Spanish Navy, but gave it up to his parents' disappointment. He travelled on foot to Paris, where he studied art, chemistry and mechanical engineering. The experiments which he had to conduct in the latter two were dangerous, leading him to decide to focus on painting alone.[3] He was a student of Gabriel Ferrier.[4] After Paris, he studied in London, where he eventually settled.[2]

Falero had a particular interest in astronomy and incorporated celestial constellations into many of his works, such as "The Marriage of a Comet" and "Twin Stars". His interest and knowledge of astronomy also led him to illustrate the works of Camille Flammarion.[2]

In 1896, the year of his death, Maud Harvey sued Falero for paternity. The suit alleged that Falero seduced Harvey when she was 17, first serving as his housemaid, and then model. When he discovered she was pregnant, he dismissed her. She won the case and was awarded five shillings per week in support of their child.[2]

Falero died at University College Hospital, London, at the age of 45.

Painter, inventor and engineer from Granada, Luis Ricardo Falero showed a precocious talent for painting, and as a child he was sent by his parents to the Richmond School (England), so that he could learn English and also become familiar with the watercolour technique. In 1860, when the painter was only nine years old, he left England to continue his training in Paris. On his return to Spain, at the age of fifteen, he entered the Naval Academy in accordance with his parents' wishes. However, a year later he left military service to study art, chemistry and industrial engineering. With the lawyer Joaquín María de Paz y Casanovas as his protector, he decided to concentrate on his artistic practice and in 1867 he made his first copies of the great masters in the Prado Museum. He then left for Paris clandestinely, where he survived by painting portraits in pencil. In Paris he had a new patron, General J.B.P. Vaillant, then Minister of Fine Arts, who commissioned a series of portraits of ministers. This project would be his real training, as he never attended a school of Fine Arts. However, in a moment of depression, he decided to abandon his brushes and devote himself to science, studying at the Natural History Museum in Paris. In the following years he carried out several industrial experiments and invented various electrical generators. At the same time he became interested in the world of the supernatural, which was very much in vogue in Paris at the time, and in fact these themes would be a constant theme in his painting from then on, once he resumed his interest in the Fine Arts. During these years he was associated with Flamarion and Palmaroli, and produced works that were still classicist and academic in flavour. Gradually he began to deal with other themes, in works such as "The Opium Smoking Woman" and "Galatea in front of Pygmalion in Ecstasy", which opened up a new thematic field in his production, leaving behind the old orientalist and academic themes. He began to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1877, where he continued to exhibit regularly, except in 1884, when he did so at the Salon des Indépendants. At the same time, he enjoyed increasing commercial success thanks to the art dealer Goupil, with whom he worked from 1881. However, he did not win any medals at the Parisian salons and finally decided to move to London in 1887. Despite this, two years later he took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where he received an honourable mention. In London he exhibited in leading galleries and also at the Royal Academy. From England he also sent his works to the United States, where they were well received. Falero is currently represented in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, among other notable public and private collections.

Luis Ricardo Falero (Spanish, 1851-1896) The Tempest signed and dated 'Falero / 1889' (lower right)oil on canvas29 x 16in (73.8 x 40.6cm) Provenance: Private collection, Montreal;Thence by descent to the present owner.Luis Ricardo Falero was born to a wealthy family in Grenada, Spain, in the mid-19th century. At a young age, Falero went against his family's wish that he enroll in the military service, and instead sought to study arts. As his style developed, Falero became known for his representations of the female nude, particularly those of mythical origin, such as angels, nymphs, etc.In this particular work, Falero depicts a powerful scene from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Here, the artist depicts the character of Prospero, adorned by a vibrant red robe with delicate accent, towering over a figure that lays draped in the middle of a tree, which appears to have been split apart. This scene references Prospero freeing the spirit Ariel from the tree she was imprisoned in by the witch Sycorax, who previously inhabited the island. Given his known preference for the female form, the artist has cast the character of Ariel as female, while other painters have interpreted it as either sex. The vivid and lush yellows and greens in the forest background provide a wonderful contrast to the dark wood of the tree trunk. Additionally, Ariel's delicate skin and garment appear to emanate a warm glow, adding to the magical element of the work.

Luis Ricardo Falero (Spanish, 1851-1896) A classical beauty A classical beauty signed and dated 'FALERO/89' (incised upper right) oil on canvas 73.7 x 40.6cm (29 x 16in). Footnotes Luis Ricardo Falero, Duke of Labranzano, led a short, but colourful life. Born in Toledo in 1851, he joined the Spanish navy, but much to his parent's disappointment he resigned his commission and, determined to pursue his love of the arts, set out for Paris. Travelling the 1300 kilometres by foot, Falero paid for his food and lodging en route by drawing portraits in crayon. On his arrival in Paris, he studied chemistry, mechanical engineering and art. However, laboratory experiments proved too dangerous so he decided to concentrate on a career as an artist, enrolling at the studio of the portrait painter and Orientalist Gabriel Ferrier. Fascinated by astronomy, he combined his love of science and art with a celebration of the female nude in a series of works, the most famous of which The Double Star caused a sensation when shown at the Salon in 1881. Falero continued to produce highly finished mythological and dreamlike pictures, and works inspired by classical antiquity reflecting contemporary interest in Egypt and the ancient world. By 1889, the year the present lot was painted, Falero had moved to London and was living at 100 Fellows Road, north of Regent's Park; he continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1893. One of the models that the artist used was Maud Harvey, who was also his housemaid; however she fell pregnant and on hearing of her condition, Falero dismissed her. Maud then sued him for paternity, claiming that he had seduced her when she was seventeen. The case found in her favour and Falero was ordered to pay her five shillings per week in support of their child. Whether this scandal contributed to his early death is unknown, but he died at University College Hospital in 1896 aged 45.

Luis Falero (1851-1896) 40"x32" o/c 'La Cigana' po

    Est: $4,500 - $6,500

Luis Falero (1851-1896) 40"x32" o/c 'La Cigana' portrait - Falero, considered one of the most interesting characters in the art world of Paris, Luis Falero might have stepped out from a canvas by Velasquez. Along with his black eyes and fiery expression, he wore his black hair and beard in the style of the old Spanish portraits. For relaxation he turned his attention to mathematics and scientific studies, engaged in astronomy, or passionately read of the supernatural. This latter area particularly, was to deeply influence the direction of his artwork. Falero was born in Grenada, Spain, in 1851. At the age of 7 he went to study at Richmond College in England to learn English and the art of watercolors. His rich parents intended for him to enter the Spanish naval service, but at the age of 16 he left school and made his way to Paris. He first painted the classical and conventional characters, but following his ruling passion for the spirit world, Falero commenced upon the subject of nude female forms in allegorical settings for which he soon became famous. From his first success in 1878 with Witches Going to the Sabbath he followed with many pictures in the same style. One critic wrote: "His angels, witches and lovely female forms personifying the planets, cupids and all, are wingless, and therefore more natural and beautiful than they otherwise would be." Of his female forms another wrote: "Most of them are sensuous representations of flesh, yet full of ideal beauty." He himself commented: "I like the nude the most, not only because I find it more difficult but because for me it is the most perfect expression of the beauty of womanhood." Luis Falero died in London at University College Hospital at the young age of 45. Biography excerpted from the unpublished catalog by Edward P. Bentley for the Haussner Restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland, titled: Haussner's: The Art Collection.
