    PIERRE LE GRAND PAR FALCONET. Spectaculaire personnage en BRONZE DORÉ représentant le CAVALIER DE BRONZE ou CAVALIER D'AIRAIN dit aussi MONUMENT À PIERRE LE GRAND réalisé d'après l'original d'Étienne-Maurice FALCONET (1716-1791) et figurant l'empereur Pierre le Grand (1672-1725) finement ciselé en César à cheval le bras droit levé (pointant la Neva) sa monture se cabrant et écrasant de ses membres postérieurs le serpent de la trahison. L'ensemble repose sur un important monolithe de malachite appliqué de part et d'autre d'éléments en bronze doré lisant en latin et en cyrillique la dédicace : "Petro Primo/Catharina Secunda/1782". Travail russe du XIXe siècle. Manques mais bon état. Dim. H. 35.5 x L. 30 x P. 16 cm. Historique: Cette statue équestre de Pierre le Grand dressée sur l'actuelle place du Sénat fut inaugurée sous le règne de l'impératrice Catherine II (1729-1796) qui voulut ainsi honorer son glorieux prédécesseur. Bien que la paternité de cette oeuvre soit attribuée au sculpteur Étienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) le visage de Pierre le Grand est quant à lui dû à l'artiste Marie-Anne Collot (1748-1821) qui accompagna son maître Falconet lors de son voyage en Russie en 1766. Elle modela le visage de l'empereur défunt d'après son masque mortuaire et divers portraits qu'elle trouva à Saint-Pétersbourg. La statue fondue initialement en 1775 chez Emelian Khaïlov ne fut achevée qu'en 1777 à cause d'un accident de coulée. Elle fut inaugurée le 7 août 1782 mais sans l'artiste rentré en France quatre ans plus tôt. ПЕТР ВЕЛИКИЙ ОТ FALCONET. Все покоится на большом малахитовом монолите нанесенном по обе стороны на элементы из позолоченной бронзы с надписью на латыни и кириллице: «Петро Примо/Катарина Секунда/1782».     A PAIR OF LOUIS XV SIDE CHAIRS BY PIERRE FALCONET CIRCA 1750-1760 With caned backs and seats, painted in distressed grey and dark leather squab shaped squab cushions, each stamped to back rail 87cm high, 47cm wide The same FALCONET stamp was used by two Paris menuisiers in the 18th century: Pierre Falconet (b. 1683) and his son Louis Falconet (master 1743, d. ca. 1775). From the style of these chairs they are almost certainly made by the son.

    Portrait of a young boy in profile to the right, traditionally said to be the artist's son black, white and red chalk on light brown paper 409 x 321 mm. NOTES Falconet was sent in 1766 by his father Etienne-Maurice to study portraiture with Sir Joshua Reynolds in London where he stayed until 1773. He then returned to France where he married Marie Anne Collot in 1778. It is possible that the present portrait is of his son. The boy's cropped classical fringe would have been the fashion in revolutionary Paris. A comparable drawing was sold in these Rooms, 10 January 1990, lot 124, illustrated.
