    • ONOFRE FALCO (Active in Valencia between 1536 and 1560) "Annunciation" and "Adoration of the Shepherds"
      Mar. 28, 2023

ONOFRE FALCO (Active in Valencia between 1536 and 1560) "Annunciation" and "Adoration of the Shepherds"

      Est: €10,500 - €14,000

Pair of oil paintings on panel Bibliography: - GOmez Frechina, J., "Onofre FalcO, a Spanish Renaissance master", in Colnaghi Studies, Journal - 03, Oct. 2018, p. 179-200, figs. 18 and 19. Belonging to an important dynasty of artists, Onofre FalcO is one of the most important figures in 16th-century Valencian painting. The fact that his workshop was one of the ones that paid the most taxes and that he held the positions of painter of the Generalitat and the City speaks for itself of his importance. His production, however, is not very abundant and is based mainly on attributions. Among his best known works are some tables from the main altarpiece of the parish of San Esteban in Valencia, joint commission, or rather, concluded, by Juan de Juanes. These, made around 1560, show the most evolved style of the painter and are preserved in the aforementioned temple and in the Museo Nacional del Prado, where the one of "Saint Stephen ordained as a deacon" can be found. The pair of tondos presented here, released by GOmez Frechina in 2018, present a somewhat more archaic style that allows them to be related to other works by FalcO such as the "Camino del Calvario" of the Segorbe cathedral Measurements: 32 cm. diameter Released by GOmez Frechina in 2018, they present a somewhat more archaic style that allows them to be related to other works by FalcO such as the "Camino del Calvario" from the Segorbe cathedral Measurements: 32 cm. diameter Released by GOmez Frechina in 2018, they present a somewhat more archaic style that allows them to be related to other works by FalcO such as the "Camino del Calvario" from the Segorbe cathedral Measurements: 32 cm. diameter

His importance is borne out by the fact that his workshop was one of the ones that paid the most taxes and that he held the posts of painter to the Generalitat and the City Council. His output, however, is not very abundant and is mainly based on attributions. Among his best-known works are some panels for the main altarpiece of the parish church of San Esteban in Valencia, a commission shared, or rather completed, by Juan de Juanes. These, executed around 1560, show the painter's most evolved style and are kept in that church and in the Museo Nacional del Prado, which houses the panel of "Saint Stephen ordained as a deacon". The pair of unpublished tondos presented here are somewhat more archaic in style, which allows them to be related to other works by Falcó, such as the "Road to Calvary" in Segorbe cathedral.
