    Est: €1,120 - €1,400

Oil on cradled panel Italy, 1847 Carlo Falcini (19th century) - Italian painter and copyist Signed and dated ‘Carlo Falcini 1847’ on the reverse Inscribed ‘COR MEUM VIGILAT’ lower left Copy of a painting by Cristofano Allori (1577-1621), dated 1612-1618 Dimensions: 34 x 44 cm Gilt ornate frame: 46 x 56 cm The famous painting ‘The Christ Child Sleeping on the Cross’ by Cristofano Allori is now in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The current highest auction record for a similar painting by Falcini is more than €3,000 Cristofano Allori (1577-1621) is also known as Bronzino the Younger and was a painter of the Bolognese School. His most famous work is Judith with the Head of Holofernes, which was copied many times. Carlo Falcini painted copies of Raphael and Murillo and other Italian masters. The inscription ‘COR MEUM VIGILAT’ is a fragment of the sentence ‘ego dormio, et cor meum vigilat’ [I sleep, but my heart keeps watching] and comes from the Vulgate and the 23rd sermon of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux dating from the 12th century. Condition: The painting shows some craquelure due to age, light abrasion and tiny traces of the frame’s gilding along the edges. The inspection under UV light reveals several minor and major areas of retouching to the background and the figure of Christ Child. The panel is somewhat warped. The frame is minimally worn. The panel measures 34 x 44 cm, and the frame is 46 x 56 cm in size. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
