        Syed Fakaruddin (b. 1989) Ufuk, 2018

        Est: RM8,000 - RM13,000

This abstract painting by highly talented Syed Fakaruddin features his rendition of an imaginary landscape. Paint marks in many techniques and manners of colour application fill the square canvas. The orange sunset background forms the basis of many more layers: slabs of thick impasto in the sky to suggest clouds and short brushstrokes and impasto on the lower section depict the land. As part of "Malaysia: Rebirth", a group exhibition in Publika, Kuala Lumpur 2018, the show featured 80 artists displaying "their interpretation of the nation's journey, lessons, and aspirations and pays tribute to the resolve and fortitude of Malaysians and offers an enduring message of hope and optimism for the future". Syed Fakaruddin graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine art from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Shah Alam, Selangor, in 2012. He won the Malaysia Emerging Artist Award in 2019. He has been actively participating in group shows since 2009, but the "A.D.A. (Ara Damansara Artists) Show", an exhibition at Segaris Art Center, Kuala Lumpur, in 2015, became the stepping stone for his popularity in the art scene. A highly experimental and multidisciplinary artist, Syed also produces sculptures, installations, and video work. In 2021, he presented "BRU-KON-01- Nurseri" at Studio Sarang Batu in Ara Damansara as part of the Bakat Muda Sezaman 2021 "art on-site" entry. His second solo exhibition, Tindih, was held after his six-month residency at Rimbun Dahan in 2021.

        Apr. 29, 2018

SYED FAKARUDDIN (b. 1989) THE RED WATERFALL, 2015, Mixed media on canvas

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

It may just be artistic licence, as distraction, decoration or something symbolic, but a waterfall that is red is not something easily brushed off, even if it is done in Syed Fakaruddin’s unmistakeable landscape style that suggests a certain mock pointillism. Does the ‘red’ come from some kind of alluvial sediment or is indicative of a polluted topsoil, not biological but human contaminated more likely. But the open surface of the drop shows a reticulated vein of foundational roots, exaggerated to emphasize its strength and hold. A waterfall in red, probably the optimist tends to see it as a ‘Waterfall of Life’, as some may treat red as something of energy and passionate. The forest with its thick cover of plants, trees and leaves has its secret but is fragile and vulnerable not only to inclement weather but also the destructive qualities of Man.Syed Fakaruddin graduated with a BFA at UiTM Shah Alam in 2012, and Diploma at UiTM Lendu, Malacca, in 2010. He won a Consolation Award at the Nando’s Peri-fy Your Art Competition in 2012. He was represented in the Art Expo Malaysia 2014 and 2015, and also in Affordable Art Fair Singapore in 2015. His latest solo, Bumi Asing, is held at Segaris Art Centre, Kuala Lumpur, in April 2018.
