    • JAMES FAIRMAN (BRITISH/AMERICAN, 1826-1904) PASTORAL LANDSCAPE
      Oct. 19, 2024

JAMES FAIRMAN (BRITISH/AMERICAN, 1826-1904) PASTORAL LANDSCAPE

      Est: $500 - $800

JAMES FAIRMAN (BRITISH/AMERICAN, 1826-1904) PASTORAL LANDSCAPE, oil on canvas, of impressive size, a fine depiction of cattle being driven along a river, a stone arch bridge in the background, signed lower left. Unframed. Third quarter 19th century. 32" x 45". Catalogue Note: Born in Glasgow, Scotland, James Fairman (1826-1904) immigrated at the age of six with his widowed mother to the U.S. He is known to have studied at the National Academy of Design in 1842 and to have exhibited in 1844 at the American Institute. Almost nothing is known of Fairman's life for the next twenty years until he resurfaces as a Union Colonel in the American Civil War, during which he was wounded. At the conclusion of the war, he set up a studio in New York City until 1871 when he left for Europe to study and paint. After a nine-year stint on the Continent, Fairman returned to New York where he established another studio. He also became a noted critic and lecturer in his later years and taught briefly at Olivet College in Michigan before returning once again to New York. Emblematic of an artist known for his luminist compositions, the present example clearly demonstrates the artist's interest in the atmospheric interplay of light and landscape.

It is believed that one of his students was George Herbert McCord, whose landscapes, like Fairman's, are characterized by dramatic lighting effects. In 1891 Fairman returned to Europe, where he studied and traveled extensively for the next nine years. In his recent book, The Landscape of Belief (Princeton, 1996), John Davis describes Fairman as the foremost American painter of Jerusalem in the 1870s. By the early 1880s Fairman had returned to the U.S. He painted for a time in the White Mountains and taught at Mt. Olivet College in Michigan. He died in NYC in March, 1904. Fairman's works are in the collections of the Hudson River Museum, the Washington County (MD) Museum of Fine Arts, the Adirondack Museum, and the Minnesota Historical Society.
