    LINCOLN THE FRONTIERSMAN. FAIRBANKS, AVARD TENNYSON. 1897-1987. Patinated bronze, 1941. Signed 'Avard Fairbanks, 1941. 32/50.' Height 33 in (84cm). Provenance: purchased from Ralph Newman, the well-known Abraham Lincoln scholar and owner of the Abraham Lincoln Bookshop, 22 April 1993. Fairbanks was commissioned by the Ewa Plantation School in Oahu to create an inspirational Lincoln sculpture for their campus. At first he thought to represent Lincoln in his frock coat, but thought that was inappropriate for the tropics. When he realized his audience was schoolchildren, he chose to represent Lincoln as a young frontiersman, ax in hand. The full-size original was unveiled at the school in 1944 and still stands today. This smaller bronze is from an edition of 50 created during the time Fairbanks was working on the larger version. For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website
