Ferdinand Fagerlin (Sweden,1825-1907) oil painting antique

    Est: $1,800 - $2,300

ARTIST: Ferdinand Fagerlin (Swedish, 1825 - 1907) NAME: Interior Scene YEAR: 1873 MEDIUM: oil on canvas CONDITION: Few small paint losses. Some craquelure. No visible inpaint under UV light. SIGHT SIZE: 16 x 20 inches / 40 x 50 cm FRAME SIZE: unframed (In-House framing available) SIGNATURE: lower left CATEGORY: antique vintage painting AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 120452 US SHIPPING: $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: In the middle of the 19th century, an important epoch began in Swedish art life, what is usually called the Dusseldorf painting. In 1850, the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm arranged an exhibition with Scandinavian artists, they lived in a time when Scandinavianism was celebrated as never before. At this exhibition, it was mainly two Norwegian painters who attracted attention and interest, the genre painter Adolf Tidemand and the landscape painter Hans Gude. It was certainly these artists who inspired the many Swedish painters to leave Sweden. Germany, Holland and France loomed. Among the genre painters who traveled south early was the Stockholmer Ferdinand Fagerlin. In 1853 he embarked on the journey to Dusseldorf, a city that would remain his home for the rest of his life. His motive circle gradually became increasingly Dutch. From the beginning of the 1860s, the North Sea coast became the destination for his summer trips, where he made narrative paintings, sketches and drafts, with the fishing population in the center. It was primarily, as Flicka in front of the mirror shows, the interiors that interested the painter. He appears here as the indomitable realist who, with a sharp eye, pays equal attention to both persons and objects. The paintings become historical anecdotes that tell about the population's life and living, its houses, interiors and furniture, household utensils and tools, textiles and costumes, for everyday life as well as for holidays. It is this world of images that Fagerlin brings into Swedish painting. For despite the fact that he had settled in Germany and was married to a German girl, he always considered himself Swedish and closely followed the art development of his home country. Among other things, he took part in the Opponents' protest against the Academy in 1885. Ferdinand Fagerlin made his real breakthrough at an international exhibition in Dublin in 1865. After that, the Swedish critics did not spare the praise either. In 1891, Olof Granberg wrote the following, which can be seen as a summary of Ferdinand Fagerlin's painting: “His works are not indifferent, meaningless studies, but have qualities that must appeal to everyone through the soulfulness of the presentation and the superior characteristics, not to mention perfected technical execution. Each work is an interesting, ingeniously depicted chapter of human life with its shadows and days, marked by psychological sharpness and depicted with unsurpassed mastery. ".
