By family repute it was commissioned by his Great-Great grandfather, Mark MacTaggart-Stewart who had a great affinity to the Southwick Estate in Ayrshire and prided himself on his herd of cattle in the parkland. The Estate was sold in the General Strike of 1926 finding running two scottish estates.The painting is the largest of three paintings all in the same style and frame of the Southwick Estate. One is retained in Scotland, the other has been kept by the vendor and this is the largest of the three and depicts Southwick House in the background.Catalogue Note:

DESCRIPTION: James Faed Jr. (Scottish, 1856-1920). Oil on canvas. Landscape. Label on the back reads "...from Lock Katrine Perthshire James Faed Junior No 1 ... Hill Studios Abbey Road NW". Signed in the lower right corner "James Faed Jun'". In a wood and gessoed frame with gold painting. The second son of six children, Faed was born near Galloway; two of his brothers also became artists. He moved with them to Edinburgh after his fathers death, where he began to paint landscapes, portraits, and miniatures, in oils and watercolors. He became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy for twenty years. MEASUREMENTS: 13-3/4" x 11-3/4". Overall with frame 19-1/4" x 17-1/4". CONDITION: Some small areas of loss to painting, mostly around the edges of frame and to three areas on the trees and mountain. Wear to outside of frame.
