                  May. 09, 2024

A highly significant unique colonnade clock in the style of Peter Carl Fabergé, Saint Petersburg 1846 - 1920 Switzerland

                  Est: €20,000 - €40,000

A highly significant unique colonnade clock In the style of Peter Carl Fabergé Saint Petersburg 1846 - 1920 Switzerland Russia Circa 2000 Height 24.5 cm, diameter 12.5 cm Based on the colonnade egg by Fabergé from 1910 Russian jade, pink enamel Decorated in 14kt yellow gold (marked) Circumferential 8 columns with ionic capitals Two doves in the centre, symbolising a pair of lovers Dome decorated with openwork gold ornaments & diamonds, at the top a pink cabochon-cut semi-precious stone Figures of the egg-shaped clock set with diamonds, in the hand an oval diamond of 6 mm On the back the movement is to be wound, key also 14kt yellow gold Time display by rotation of the numerals Clock running, movement not checked First-class condition (1 diamond, diameter approx. 1mm, missing), can easily be replaced The goldsmith and jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé is known for his artistic pieces of jewellery, especially the Fabergé eggs. However, he also produced other works and exerted great influence on subsequent generations of jewellers. This extremely valuable piece not only impresses with its use of precious materials such as gold, jade, and wavy guilloché pink as well as white enamel, but also with its unusual design, which incorporates elements from various major works by Carl Fabergé. There are only four Fabergé Easter eggs in total that contain a clock. The colonnade architecture is related to that of the 1910 Colonnade Egg, which was made by Henrik Wigström under Fabergé's supervision and is now in the Royal Collection (RCIN inv. no. 40084) of the British royal family. It is a revolving clock egg that was created for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia as a gift for his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The architecture of the Colonnade Egg symbolises the temple of love, with this interpretation being underpinned by the addition of a pair of doves as a symbol of lovers. However, the time is shown in Arabic numerals. This is not the case with the Madonna Lily Egg from 1899, where the time is shown in Roman numerals, similar to the object presented here. The enamelled band with twelve diamond-decorated numerals rotates around the perimeter of the egg; the clock is wound using a gold key. It was made by Michael Perchin and also served as a gift from the Tsar to his wife. Today, this egg is kept in the Kremlin Armoury in Moscow (inv. no. MP-653/I-2).

                  Est: €1,400 - €2,500

Walking stick In the style of Peter Carl Fabergé St Petersburg 1846 - 1920 Switzerland Wooden cane Russian jade handle Silver enamel Red enamel with silver-gilt decorative elements Total length 96.5 cm, handle length 11 cm, ornamental shaft length 4.5 cm Total weight 572g The goldsmith and jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé is known for his artistic jewellery, especially the Fabergé eggs. However, he also produced other works and exerted great influence on subsequent generations of jewellers. The Fabergé walking sticks, which could be made of hard stones, enamel, and precious stones, are exceptional and revive 18th century craftsmanship techniques that Carl Fabergé discovered during his Grand Tour of Europe. Walking sticks were popular as objects of power and prestige long before Fabergé. Still, in the first half of the 20th century, Fabergé developed detailed and magnificently crafted walking sticks together with workshop manager Henrik Wigström. For example, enamel was applied to the metal areas, here in a red guilloché ground under gilded decorative elements.

                  Est: €1,800 - €3,600

Decorative object In the style of Peter Carl Fabergé St Petersburg 1846 - 1920 Switzerland Russia Photo frame, silver-gilt (88 Zolotniki, master's mark EK), enamelled & decorated with diamonds all round Sphinx, silver-gilt (88 Zolotniki, master's mark EK) Base made from cut agate Length 10 cm, width 8 cm, height 12 cm Diameter of photo frame 6.1 cm Total weight 508 g The goldsmith and jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé is known for his artistic jewellery, especially the Fabergé eggs. However, he also produced other works and exerted great influence on subsequent generations of jewellers. This decorative ornamental object in the style of Carl Fabergé is a table picture frame with a sphinx with a pharaoh's face and Nemes headscarf on a cut agate base. It carries a photo frame on its head, the base of which is enamelled in turquoise and guilloched in a wavy pattern. Such table picture frames were popular and are often found in the form of columns; however, the depiction of a sphinx together with a picture frame is rare. However, the Lithuanian silversmith and Fabergé master Julius Alexander Rappoport created interesting decorative objects in the form of naturalistic animal figures, including sphinxes, for example as lighters or table bells.

                  Est: €4,000 - €5,000

PETER CARL FABERGE (Russia, 1846 - Switzerland, 1920). Wine decanter. Silver and terracotta. Missing a soldering point on the lid. With contrasts. With Raquel Meller inscription. Measurements: 24 x 12 x 6 cm. A beautiful chiselled silver structure partially envelops this decanter for pouring wine. It is a creation of the illustrious workshop of the jeweller Fabergé with floral decorations in relief, raised on a highly decorative rocaille base. It has a stylised handle with scrolls. Its centre has a pavilion with the inscription 'Raquel Meller', which indicates that it may have been a gift from an aficionado to the famous Spanish singer, cupletista and film actress. The Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé is considered one of the world's foremost goldsmiths, and is especially known for his Easter eggs commissioned by Tsar Alexander III and later by his son, Nicholas II. Born in St. Petersburg, Fabergé was trained in the family jewellery workshop, through the Grand Tour of Europe from 1864 onwards and possibly at the School of Arts and Crafts in Dresden. On his return from his trip he was mentored by Hiskias Pendin, the master goldsmith in his father's firm, with whom he catalogued and restored objects at the Hermitage during the 1870s. After Pendin's death in 1882 Fabergé took over the management of the workshop, soon achieving an enormous reputation through official exhibitions such as the Pan-Russian Exhibition in Moscow in 1882, where he won the gold medal and the St. Stanislaus medal. The Tsar's admiration for his work began just at this time, and Fabergé soon became the favourite jeweller of the Russian imperial court. Just three years later, in 1885, Alexander III appointed Fabergé as the official jeweller to the imperial household. In addition to making the famous Easter eggs between 1887 and 1917, Fabergé produced a wide range of items, from tableware to jewellery, and in 1900 he represented Russia at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where he was unable to compete because he was on the jury. However, the firm was forced to close with the outbreak of the October Revolution, which was nationalised by the Bolsheviks. Fabergé's works are now housed in leading museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Royal Collection in London.

The synaxis (feast day) for this icon is on February 12,[4] as well as on Bright Tuesday,[2] and also on October 13 for the translation to Moscow of the Iveron icon.[5] 17th-century Russian version: Iverskaya. The icon belongs to a family of images of the Theotokos known as Hodegetria (Greek: Όδηγήτρια, "she who leads the way") after the prototype from Constantinople. In these icons, the Christ Child sits on his mother's left arm and she is depicted pointing to Christ with her right hand. Another famous icon based upon Hodegetria is Our Lady of Częstochowa. A unique characteristic of this icon is what appears to be a scar on the Virgin Mary's right cheek or her chin. A number of different traditions exist to explain this, but the one most commonly held by Orthodox Christians is that the icon was stabbed by a soldier in Nicaea during the period of Byzantine iconoclasm under the Emperor Theophilus (829–842). According to tradition, when the icon was stabbed, blood miraculously flowed out of the wound. The original in Iveron is encased in a chased riza of silver and gold covering almost all the figures except the faces, as is common with the most venerated icons. 2) Peter Carl Fabergé, also known as Karl Gustavovich Fabergé (Russian: Карл Гу́ставович Фаберже́, Karl Gustavovich Faberzhe; 30 May 1846 – 24 September 1920), was a Russian jeweller best known for the famous Fabergé eggs made in the style of genuine Easter eggs, but using precious metals and gemstones rather than more mundane materials. He was one of the sons of the founder of the famous jewelry legacy House of Fabergé.

Faberge The kovsh, a traditional Russian drinking vessel with the shape of a ship s hull has been in use since the Middle Ages until the 19th century throughout all levels of society. Originally a kovsh was made from wood and used as a mere basic commodity for serving food and drinks. At the beginning of the 18th century the tsar ordered gilded kovshs to give away for special merits for the country. During the 19th and beginning of the 20th century gold- and silversmiths like Faberge created exceptional and frequently monumental kovshs of the highest quality on customer order for representation. In 1887 Faberge opened a branch in Moscow on Kuznetsky Most Street, a most famous boulevard. From 1900 onwards Faberge manufactured all large silver objects in Moscow. At that time the city could be regarded as the centre of Russian silversmith business where all major companies had their headquarters and the country’s best silversmiths gathered. Another feature of the Moscow branch was the specialization on the Neo-Russian style. Russian-folkloristic themes and the recollection of Russian history became popular during the second half of the 19th century. Depiction of heroes, elements of fairy tales, epics or historical facts and personalities were seized on. Those motifs were formed three-dimensionally or placed on objects as reliefs. Faberge designed several monumental kovshs with the bogatyr topic, the heroes from the legends of the medieval Kievan Rus. Likewise the theme of the falconer is deeply rooted in the Russian medieval history. Falconry was regarded as one of the most popular pastimes of the Russian aristocracy, especially the boyars. The figurative part of the kovsh can be traced back to the sculpture "The tsar s falconer" (1872) by the Russian sculptor Eugeny Alexandrovich Lanceray (1848–1886). A monumental version was presented during the All-Russia Exhibition 1882 in Moscow, where Faberge participated for the first time and obtained a gold medal. According to the current research status, two further similar versions of falconer kovshs are known besides the one being offered. One comparable kovsh with slightly differing body form, handle and smaller divergent details with the inventory number "24682" belonged to the Swedish Nobel-family, an important customer of Faberge. Especially Emanuel Nobel, Swedish-Russian oil magnate of the Branobel Company ordered several objects (further provenance: 20th May 1997 Sotheby s Geneva, lot 290/ 26th November 2012 Christie s London, lot 284).
