Autenrieth, [1831-1843] Oblong folio (16 3/4 x 23 1/4 in.; 425 x 590 mm). Lithographed title page, 100 lithographed plates by A. Gnauth, Emminger, Baumeister, & Kauffman after Faber du Faur, all hand-colored; left and right margins renewed in plate 2 mending crease tear touching edge of plate, plates 23 & 58 a bit short, plates 3 & 54 laid down with two tears in upper margin of 54 entering image, a few other marginal tears, plates 94 & 95 (which are joined) laid down on linen. Contemporary black pebbled cloth with gilt lettered title on upper cover; rebacked in three-quarter dark green crushed morocco gilt with new endleaves.

      MONUMENTAL W/C GOUACHE - 'On the Field of Borodino, 17 Sept' by Christian Wilhelm Faber du Faur (German, 1780-1857), a Lieutenant in Napoleon's Grand Army during the Invasion of Russia, this done as part of a series later reproduced and sold as stone lithographs; this image depicts the aftermath of the final battle that opened the way to Moscow which took place on 7 Sept, 1812 at the Valley of Shevardino, depicting the ruins of Morand's division with a tangled mass of corpses stripped of their boots, dead and crippled horses and scattered wreckage, unsigned, described in his diaries, a more finished version was used for the print, as depicted in the book. In the original period frame and old glass, yellowed, tear on right, stains at sides and bottom, puncture on left, SS: 26" x 48", OS: 32" x 54". A remarkable record of this pivotal historical event.

      MONUMENTAL W/C GOUACHE - 'The Lichtenstein Cafe, 7 Dec' by Christian Wilhelm Faber du Faur (German, 1780-1857), a Lieutenant in Napoleon's Grand Army during the Invasion of Russia, this done as part of a series later reproduced and sold as stone lithographs; this image depicts the ragged remnants of the artist's artillery regiment attempting to regroup at the last stop in Vilna, Russia on the retreat from Moscow, under pursuit by Cossacks, showing officers of the 25th Division, this painting was used to create the print as depicted in the book of du Faur's work, in later gold molded frame, glazed, SS: 25 1/4" x 39", OS: 31" x 44", not laid down, some small areas of water staining, two small punctures, small edge tears, stretcher impression. A remarkable record of the end of Napoleon's Grand Army made by an Officer who was there.
