Fabio Fabbi - "Capricci di bimbi" (Toddler tantrums)

    Est: €2,500 - €3,000

Fabio Fabbi was born in Bologna on July 18, 1861, the son of Giuseppe and Emilia Negri. In 1876, he earned "honorable mentions" in various disciplines at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, including statuary sculpture, portrait from life, figure elements and print copying (Stivani-Borgogelli, 1981). After completing his studies, he moved to Florence, where he attended sculpture courses at the Academy of Fine Arts under Augusto Rivalta. In 1880 he graduated, and in 1883 he won the Florence Academy's government prize for a bas-relief entitled "A Matter of Honor." In 1886 he began a series of trips to Egypt and other Mediterranean countries that significantly influenced his artistic production. Fabbi distinguished himself as a representative of the Orientalist painting current, following the verist aesthetic of Alberto Pasini and experimenting with an academic eclecticism. Among Fabbi's works, few are easy to find, but these include "Mosque" and "Four Towers." He participated in various exhibitions, exhibiting paintings such as "A Terrace at Alexandria" in 1888 and winning prizes at the Munich International Exhibition for the paintings "The Sale of a Slave" and "The Seven Deadly Sins." In later years, Fabbi also devoted himself to paintings of religious subjects, submitting works such as "Annunciation" and "Christ Mocked." He maintained lively relations with Emilia, collaborating with his brother Alberto on works such as "S. Giovanni decollato" and "Sacro Cuore con s. Anthony Abbot and s. Anthony Mary Zacharias." Throughout his career, Fabbi received honors, including being appointed professor in Florence in 1893, the academy in Bologna in 1894 and the title of Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia in 1898. In 1936, he moved from Bologna to Casalecchio di Reno, where he died on September 24, 1945. Fabbi not only excelled as a painter but also distinguished himself as an illustrator, contributing to more than a hundred volumes, including literary classics and adventure novels. He also illustrated for Fiammetta magazine in 1896, and in 1936 he presented medal models at the Simplon International Exhibition in Milan. In 1911, he participated in the Exposition of Modern Christian Art in Paris. Fabbi's brother Alberto was born on September 20, 1858, following a similar artistic path. A portraitist and illustrator, he participated in fine arts exhibitions in Bologna and distinguished himself in the group of Bolognese satirical draftsmen. He died on May 21, 1906, in Bologna. FABIO FABBI (ITALIAN, 1861-1946) Egyptian Street Scene oil on canvas signed lower right: F. Fabbi 99.5 x 169.5cm PROVENANCE Acquired at a Sydney auction in the 1950s (as Tunisian Street Scene) Thence by descent, Private Collection, Brisbane OTHER NOTES This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné for the artist. CATALOGUE NOTE Fabio Fabbi (1861-1946) was an Italian Neoclassical painter whose extensive and prolific oeuvre dubbed him the Last of the Orientalists. Recently discovered archives have contextualised his contribution to the genre. Fabbi was born in Bologna in 1861, a stone's throw away from Florence, the heart of Italy's liberal arts and artistic production. He displayed creative potential at a young age, receiving commendations for his studies in classical sculpture at age 16. Shortly after, he was granted a place at the Academy of Fine Art, Florence, where he studied diligently under the tutelage of master Augusto Rivalta, excelling as a classical sculptor and painter. Journeying to Egypt in 1886, Fabio joined his brother Alberto Fabbi in Alexandria. This trip was a formative pilgrimage for the young artist who revelled in the foreign and exotic scenery, tastes, colours and scents. His journal from this period exquisitely rendered visual elements surrounding Alexandria and the streets of Cairo. (1) These enchanting sketches influenced the artists' later paintings. He also took photographs on the journey, hungrily documenting everything he could with all his senses. The recent discovery of the artist's journals has been transformative in understanding his muse, illuminating the profound effect and subsequent love for the exotic oriental scenes he became so famous for. Egyptian Street Scene is a rich tapestry of the artist's imagination—it evokes a wanderlust and yearning for otherness; the women are resplendent with jewellery, expensive silk chiffon and embroidery. Freshly cut flowers cascade freely, starkly contrasting the men who watch the festive scene in austere contemplation. The throng of the crowded street behind carries on with the humdrum of daily life, unabashed and unheeding the parade as it sweeps through in full regalia. A splendid and intoxicating example of the Italian artist's characteristic theme, Egyptian Street Scene, presents an exciting opportunity to acquire a work by a master of Italian Orientalism, whose recently unearthed archives can offer a glimpse of the past newly discovered.
