    • John Wilson Ewbank, RSA,  Two River Scenes: Figures making camp by a ruin on a riverbank and a River landscape with a boat and figure, mountains beyond
      Jul. 19, 2023

John Wilson Ewbank, RSA,  Two River Scenes: Figures making camp by a ruin on a riverbank and a River landscape with a boat and figure, mountains beyond

      Est: £200 - £400

John Wilson Ewbank, RSA,  British 1779-1847-  Two River Scenes: Figures making camp by a ruin on a riverbank; and a River landscape with a boat and figure, mountains beyond;  each watercolour and bodycolour on card, both indistinctly inscribed on the reverse, each 15.7 x 22.5 cm., two (2).  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present works are particularly charming examples of the landscapes which defined the artist's output. Ewbank worked in part as an illustrator, with 51 of his drawings of Edinburgh engraved for James Brown's 'Picturesque Views of Edinburgh' (1825), and others produced for editions of Walter Scott's 'Waverley' novels, and Gilbert White's 'Natural History of Selbourne'. Although Ewbank typically painted the rural scenery in England and Scotland, the present works are imbued with a slightly fantastical air, perhaps evoking Classical Italianate landscapes, with the vast horizons populated by romantic ruins.

      Est: £5,000 - £8,000

Property of a Gentleman. The River Tees at Barnard Castle with a Gentleman Flyfishing and a Gentleman Flighting and other Figures at Sunset. Attributed to John Wilson Ewbank. Oil on canvas. In gilded frame. John Wylson Ewbank was born in Darlington, Durham on 4th May 1799 to Michael Ewbank, an innkeeper. He was adopted by his wealthy uncle who lived on the banks of the river Tees at Wycliffe, a short carriage ride from Bernard Castle, the subject of this painting. Ewbank it is said, showed great skill in drawing from the age of 4 which increased with his age leading him to become apprentice to an ornamental painter in Newcastle called Thomas Coulson whom he later accompanied to Edinburgh in 1816. It was here, on the advise of Coulson, that he took lessons with Alexander Nasmyth. His painting flourished and, although he mainly painted Landscapes and marines, he also produced a number of successful history paintings like "The King's Entry into Edinburgh" which he exhibited at the Royal Institution and sold for 120 guineas.  Dimensions: [Frame] 27.5 in (H) x 35 in (W) [Canvas] 20 in (H) x 30.25 in (W)
