Walker Evans Sold at Auction Prices

Photographer, b. 1903 - d. 1975

Walker Evans (November 3, 1903 – April 10, 1975) was an American photographer and photojournalist best known for his work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) documenting the effects of the Great Depression. Much of Evans's work from the FSA period uses the large-format, 8×10-inch (200×250 mm) view camera. He said that his goal as a photographer was to make pictures that are "literate, authoritative, transcendent".

Many of his works are in the permanent collections of museums and have been the subject of retrospectives at such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art or George Eastman Museum.

He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Jessie (née Crane) and Walker Evans. His father was an advertising director. Walker was raised in an affluent environment; he spent his youth in Toledo, Chicago, and New York City. He attended The Loomis Institute and Mercersburg Academy[4] before graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, in 1922. He studied French literature for a year at Williams College, spending much of his time in the school's library, before dropping out. He returned to New York and worked as a night attendant in the map room of the Public Library. After spending a year in Paris in 1926, he returned to the United States to join a literary and art crowd in New York City. John Cheever, Hart Crane, and Lincoln Kirstein were among his friends. He was a clerk for a stockbroker firm in Wall street from 1927 to 1929.

Evans took up photography in 1928 around the time he was living in Ossining, New York. His influences included Eugène Atget and August Sander. In 1930, he published three photographs (Brooklyn Bridge) in the poetry book The Bridge by Hart Crane. In 1931, he made a photo series of Victorian houses in the Boston vicinity sponsored by Lincoln Kirstein.

In May and June 1933, Evans took photographs in Cuba on assignment for Lippincott, the publisher of Carleton Beals' The Crime of Cuba (1933), a "strident account" of the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado. There Evans drank nightly with Ernest Hemingway, who loaned him money to extend his two-week stay an additional week. His photographs documented street life, the presence of police, beggars and dockworkers in rags, and other waterfront scenes. He also helped Hemingway acquire photos from newspaper archives that documented some of the political violence Hemingway described in To Have and Have Not (1937). Fearing that his photographs might be deemed critical of the government and confiscated by Cuban authorities, he left 46 prints with Hemingway. He had no difficulties when returning to the United States, and 31 of his photos appeared in Beals' book. The cache of prints left with Hemingway was discovered in Havana in 2002 and exhibited at an exhibition in Key West.

I interviewed, and was helped by, Cuban revolutionaries as well as government officials."

WALKER EVANS (1903-1975) Boarded shopfront of The Plenge Chemical Company, Charleston, South Carolina. March 1935. Silver print, the image measuring 7⅝x9½ inches (19.4x24.1 cm.), flush mounted, with the title and other notations in Romana Javitz's hand in ink on mount verso. Provenance The Collection of Romana Javitz; by descent to the Present Owner Romana Javitz (1903-80) was curator of The New York Public Library's Picture Collection from 1928-68, where she assembled one of the most historically important and artistically significant collections of 20th-century photographs. An early champion of photography who said "great photography ranks with great art," she established personal relationships with Dorothea Lange, Lewis Hine, and Berenice Abbott, encouraging artists to bring her work, which she subsequently purchased for the library. In 1936, Javitz worked with Roy Stryker, head of the Farm Security Administration's Photographic Section to organize the files of the Resettlement Administration. She visited Washington D.C. to format the photographs into a collection, and he sent her duplicate prints of some work to ensure their preservation before it was clear that they would be preserved in D.C. Javitz felt strongly about this material. The seminal text Words on Pictures (edited by Anthony T. Troncale) records interviews in which she discussed the body of work (the collection had, ultimately, 40,000 prints from the various photographers who worked for the F.S.A.), highlighting both the new documentary mode of image-making as well as the artistic success of the work. Javitz recalled "when the photographs came to us, they just gave us a completely new eye. It was really a third eye for all our trouble. You have no idea of what richness it meant to us. First of all, it was the first time that we had images that were clean cut. They weren't made to sell records or soap or whatnot" (p. 208). Her deep understanding of the material extended to the idea of the photo essay. "You have a sense that every picture is just like one word of a sentence," she said about Lange's work (p. 205) and describing FSA photographs generally arriving at the NYPL. Seeing just one is not enough, she argued. "Curators of photographic collections-and I'm going to include Steichen-tried very hard to present photography as an art but actually photographs as documents is a much more exciting subject" (p. 230), Javitz said in one interview. Her strong sense of considering the image content first, created a dynamic collection of images in which the idea of hierarchies and isolation were simply not applicable.

Dated 1936, printed 1971. 7 1/2" x 9 1/4" photograph, 18" x 14 3/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Walker Evans was born in St. Louis, MO in 1903. He began his exploration into photography in the late 1920s. Much of his early work is described as exhibiting the influence of European modernism. During the Great Depression, Evans accepted a job from the U.S. Department of the Interior to photograph a government-built resettlement community of coal miners in West Virginia, which led to eventually accepting a full-time position as an "information specialist" in the Department of Agriculture. His Depression-era photographs during this time became some of his most notable work, including the current image. Following the 1930s, Evans delved into writing and even became a professor of photography at the Yale University School of Art. Some described his later work as having a "vernacular" style. Walker died in New Haven, CT in 1975 at the age of 71.

Vintage silver gelatin contact print, sheet size 205 x 255mm, annotated ‘Walker Evans’ and numbered ‘R-509’ and ‘135-41’ in pencil verso. The present contact print, uncropped and with an uncharacteristic shadow in its lower left corner, is likely a working print used during Walker Evans’ commission to document the works included in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1935 landmark exhibition African Negro Art. In 2000, The Metropolitan Museum of Art organised Perfect Documents: Walker Evans and African Art, 1935, an exhibition that explored this multifaceted commission, which saw Evans photograph over 600 sculptures during the course of the six-week exhibition. In the catalogue that accompanied the Met’s exhibition, curator Virginia-Lee Webb writes, “If unwanted elements found their way into the negative or print, he simply cut them away. Evans’ repuation as a ruthless editor of his own work is strikingly demonstrated in the African art series, as is his highly personal and stylized approach.” (p.44) A print of the finished study, without shadow, is held by the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, ref. 84.XM.488.25.
