  • JOE EVANS "The Shed" (1894 Oil on Canvas)
    Dec. 10, 2022

JOE EVANS "The Shed" (1894 Oil on Canvas)

    Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Joe Evans (New York, 1857-1898) The Shed, 1894 Oil on canvas 22" x 16" Signed and dated to the bottom right corner. Presented in a frame that measures 28" x 22". 19th century landscape painter Joe Evans studied at the National Academy of Design (New York) and L'Ecole des Beaux Arts (Paris) with Jean Leon Gerome. He was a close friend of painter Dennis Bunker (Massachusetts, 1861-1890), with whom he would frequently paint. Evans served as president of the Art Students League and secretary of the Society of American Artists. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 40 due to ongoing health complications. Gallerist Henry Tully Moss observed that this particular oil painting possesses "a silver quietness... which requires a superb technique to accomplish. The refinement in color harmonies and fineness of execution reflect his training under [Jean-Leon] Gerome." Provenance: From a private collection, acquired from Henry Ruth Fine Arts (Kansas City).

Joseph Evans American, 1857-1898 Cornish, 1893 Signed Joe Evans, dated 1893 and inscribed with title (ll) Oil on canvas 16 x 22 inches Provenance: Private collection After studying with Jean-Leon Gerome in Paris, Joseph Evans returned to New York, where he was active in the Art Students League and worked as an actor and stage manager in the theatre. A sociable man in spite of frail health, Evans had a large circle of friends that included the artist Dennis Miller Bunker and the actress Ellen Terry. Owing to his early death, only a limited number of his works survive. This image of fruit trees, painted in the artists' colony of Cornish, New Hampshire, is a characteristic example of his crisp, linear style. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
