Actual stamp size, loose in black album shelf page, housed in a lucite box frame, 8 1/2" x 12". Label from Fischbach Gallery of NYC verso, dated 1974 perhaps repurposed as it has the wrong 'country' named. A successful architect graduate of Cornell, what began as a hobby became his life's work, cut short by a fire at his apartment in Amsterdam.

This envelope is the first of a dozen he made in Amsterdam in 1976, each with stamps of four different Nadorpsche apples mounted in the corners. These stamps show Bramley's seedling, the Charlamovsky, the double bellefleur and the tulip apple. Each envelope is unaddressed and canceled five times; each bears a blue sticker, printed and perforated; and a white sticker drawn in red and rubber-stamped in black by Donald Evans, which indicates that this is the eighteenth registered letter sent from the post office in the capital of Adelshoeve in 1961. The other eleven envelopes are dated, one per year, through 1972. Each stamp has a frame in three values of the same color with a multicolored apple highlighted against a circle of the darkest color. In the corners each stamp has the currency value of five, Donald Evans' favorite number. C

Evan’s imaginative stamp paintings began in his youth when he was a novice stamp collector. As an adult world traveller he continued to innovate beautifully executed whimsical stamps. Given the miniature nature of his studio practice, international travel was simultaneously convenient and also a necessary inspiration. Evans crafted forty-two fictional countries with their own native populations, customs and products in the guise of the mass-produced postage stamps of modern countries. Just like a passionate collector’s pursuit of a complete collection of stamps, Evans was driven to create a stamp compendium of his own fabulist travels, which he ultimately assembled in his own Catalogue of the World. Donald Evans was born in 1945 in Morristown, New Jersey. He graduated from Cornell University and became an architectural designer for Richard Meier and Associates in New York. Evans traveled extensively from 1971 to 1977, most often to Japan and Europe. He easily funded his studio practice by lodging with friends or by renting small flats. He worked until his untimely death by fire in his Amsterdam apartment in 1977. Donald Evans enjoyed considerable success and recognition for his work while alive, and posthumously with solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, Japan, London, Paris, New York and Washington D. C.
