JACOB HOWARD EUSTON Blue Water near Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico. Oil on canvas board, circa 1950. 505x610 mm; 20x24 1/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. With the artist's address label, Chicago, annotated in ink, verso. Ex-collection private collection, Los Angeles. A Midwestern painter, engraver and etcher, Euston (1892-1965) studied art at the Cleveland School of Art and at the Art Institute of Chicago. He began exhibiting his paintings and etchings shortly after 1920 and was a regular contributor to annual exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hoosier Salon, Indiana, and with the American Artists Professional League. Aside from his Midwestern landscapes, Euston also gained a popular following for his scenes of California and New Mexico.

LARGE COLLECTION ORIGINAL ETCHINGS WITH COPPER PLATES, DRAWINGS - Large Collection of the Work of Printmaker Jacob Howard Euston of Chicago (1892-1965), consisting mostly of landscapes, many in California and the American West, and including many of the original copper printing plates and some original drawings upon which the prints were based, including: (34) plates with prints, (38) prints without plates, (4) matted prints with plates, (26) prints with no plates, (15) drawings, (7) plates with drawings but no prints, for a total of (171) pieces, in very good, clean condition. A rare collection. From 'The Art of the Print' website: "A mid-Western painter, engraver and etcher, Jacob Howard Euston studied art techniques at the Cleveland School of Art and at the Art Institute of Chicago. He began exhibiting his paintings and etchings shortly after 1920 and was a regular contributor to annual exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hoosier Salon, Indiana, and with the American Artists Professional League. J. H. Euston was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, Hoosier Salon Patrons Association, Indiana Society of Printmakers, Northwest Printmakers, Southern Printmakers Society and the American Artists Professional League. Today his fine etchings and dry points are included in major collections such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
