BENITO ESPINÓS (Valencia, 1748-1818). "Flowerpots", 1813. Oil on canvas (x2). One of them is signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 54 x 39,5 cm; 67 x 52 cm (frame); 44 x 64 cm; 56 x 75,5 cm (frame). Pair of fully baroque vases, following an open composition, with the circular and exuberant bouquet that was common in the work of the Spanish still life painters from the middle of the 17th century, like Juan de Arellano or Tomás Yepes. The interest in reality in Baroque painting, originally linked to religious approaches, led to the acquisition of independent artistic status for a series of themes associated with nature, which until the end of the 16th century had only been depicted in conjunction with traditional subjects, i.e. religious and mythological works and portraits. Flowers, fruit, landscapes, animals, etc., became the absolute protagonists of paintings in the Baroque period, with the still life being the only one of the new themes to achieve a certain relevance in 17th-century Spain, more for its quality and originality than for its number. Juan Espinós began his artistic education at the hands of his father and later at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. After his training he moved to Madrid on several occasions, where he gave several of his works to the monarch Charles IV, all of them floral in theme. In 1784 he began to work as director of the School of Flowers and Ornaments. In 1814 he suffered a stroke that rendered his hand unusable for painting, and his career as a painter came to an end, although he continued to teach. His work was in keeping with the aesthetic standards of the time, and he devoted himself especially to the genre of flowers, which was not one of his most popular themes, but which he managed to elevate thanks to his mastery, restraint and taste as a painter. Today his works are to be found in numerous collections of great aesthetic importance, such as the royal palaces in Madrid, the National Library, the San Pío V Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia and the Prado Museum.

Signed lower right: Benito Espinos ft.Benito Espinós was taught in Valencia in the workshop of his father, the painter José Espinós. Benito played an important role in this city - both as a teacher at the academy and as a designer for the silk industry, but especially as an artist. He also painted for the court of Madrid, creating works for Charles IV and Ferdinand VII. He was without doubt the most important still life painter in Spain in the 18th century, and is renowned for the sophistication of his technique and style (Alfonso E. Perez Sanchez: Naturalezas muertas y flores del museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia, 1996, p. 81).His works, which today are almost all to be found in museum collections, brought to its ultimate fruition a genre which had been developed in Spain during the 17th century both by specialised painters such as van der Hamen, Arellano and Meléndez, as well as universal masters such as Velázquez and Zurbarán. Espinós' works testify to his careful study of these historic predecessors, but also his knowledge of the works of his French contemporaries. His paintings can be viewed in the museums of Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona, among many others.
