      Wood and metal on painted panel Vasily Dmitriewitsch Ermilov (1894-1968) – Ukrainian constructivist painter On the reverse signed in Cyrillic and dated '1924' On the reverse with Russian stamp and label Literature: Vasilij Ermilov, in: Art in Russia, St. Petersburg 1997, p. 16, fig. 22, there dated 1920-30; Michail Krivolapov in Museum magazine „Muzejniy Provulok“, 9/2008, p. 82-85, fig. p. 84-85, there dated 1932 This work is accompanied by a certificate by Professor Michail Alexandrowitsch Krivolapov in Russian of 10.03.2004 (available as copy) Dimensions: 40.4 x 61.5 cm Frame: 44 x 64 cm Provenance: Private collection, Berlin Suprematist and constructivist material collage based on sculptural objects made of wood and metal as the present work form an important part within the oeuvre of the artist who is regarded as pioneer of constructivism. The art movement was established in the 1910s in the Soviet Union and spread rapidly abroad. Condition: The objects show partially rubbed spots and small losses of color and material (to the edges). The panel bears tears, color flaking as well as a small loss of material to the lower edge, a scratch lower left and three small holes. The frame shows traces of age and wear and the plate is partially loosely and should be fixed. The overall impression is good. Vasily Dmitriewitsch Ermilov (1894-1968) Vasily Ermilov began taking painting classes at an early age. At the age of 17 he moved to Moscow to study at the University of Painting, Sculpting and Architecture. Here he came in contact with Cubism and Suprematism and made the acquaintance of the most important representatives of the Russian avant-garde like i.e. David Burljuk, Petr Konchalowsky and Ilja Maschkow who belonged to the artist group ‘Jack of Diamonds’.
