Condition B: losses and restored losses in margins; repaired tears, replaced losses, creases and overpainting in margins and image; repaired pin holes at edges; foxing in image. Hans Rudi Erdt was one of the most prolific and prestigious poster artists in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. Along with three of the other most prominent designers of the era, Lucian Bernhard, Julius Klinger and Julius Gipkens, Erdt worked for the printer Hollerbaum & Schmidt. He produced posters for a wide variety of clients, and his designs, punctuated by flat colors and strong outlines, reflect his talent as a draftsman, along with a great sense of stylization and a flair for layout. Heiligendamm was an elegant, seaside resort founded in 1793 by the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg, Freidrich Franz I; it remained popular with German royalty through the pre-World War I era. In 1899, the resort began holding a summer tennis tournament, the Heiligendamm Open; in 1908, the tournament was won by a British player, Laurie Doherty. DFP-III 763, Wember 261.

Not to slight the sporty togs on display, but it's the unsettled business playing itself out between this ruggedly natty trio on their getaway that lends spectacular dramatic impact to the design. Clothes, it seems, may make the man or woman—but it's stoically unspoken narrative that makes the poster. Although he only lived to age 35, Erdt amassed an impressive record as a graphic artist and lithographer in the single decade of 1908 to 1918. He depicted upper-class people in their sports and luxuries, and had a keen eye for reducing a scene to a few essential forms and flat colors. (Art Nouveau; Sports; Fashion; German)

The flat planes of color and bold typography are typical of Erdt's style, who gained notoriety for his contributions to Lucian Bernhard's Sachplakat movement and for his work at the Hollerbaum und Schmidt art printing company. From 1906-1918 he created innovative works for cosmetics brands, cigarette companies, car manufacturers, and weekly illustrated newspapers, and was considered one of Germany's most important posteristsa career altogether stunning for a man who died at 35. Hans Rudi Erdt was one of the major artists behind the boom of German poster design before the First World War. Like many of the other great German artists such as Julius Klinger and Lucian Bernhard, Erdt worked for Hollerbaum & Schmidt, producing posters for a wide variety of clients. His designs reflect his talent as a draughtsman, along with a great sense of stylization and a flair for layout. This poster for a brand of German champagne is one of his classics, portraying an 18th century aristocrat enjoying the beverage, (with his single-product wine cellar on display) and by proxy lending his pedigree to the product. Condition B+ / B: repaired tears, restoration and discoloration at edges; minor restorationin image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Hans Rudi Erdt was one of the most prolific poster artists in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. He studied art in Munich and then moved to Berlin. He worked at the printer Hollerbaum & Schmidt with the "dream team," which consisted of Lucian Bernhardt, Julius Klinger and Julius Gipkens. His designs, punctuated by flat colors and strong outlines, reflect his talent as a draughtsman, along with a great sense of stylization and a flair for layout. He produced posters for a wide variety of clients, including many in Munich and Berlin who were among the most prestigious upper-class bars and restaurants. Constructed in 1880, The Munich Kindl-Keller was Munich''s largest beer hall and could accomodate up to five thousand people. Here, in the year prior to the start of the First World War, advertising an elegant, bi-weekly ball, one can see the nascent Art Deco style beginning to appear. DFP-III 832, Kunst p. 19 and 123.
