    Berla Emeree (1899-1948), Pueblo House, oil on board, 19.75 x 24.75", frame: 25.75 x 30.5" Landscape painter Berla Iyone Emeree was born August 7, 1899 in Wichita, Kansas, but after 1907, grew up in El Paso, Texas. At age seventeen, she studied in Philadelphia with Frank Benton Ashley Linton and Michael Jacobs, and in Texas she was a student of Jose Arpa, Xavier Gonzalez, and Rolla Taylor. In El Paso, she opened the Emeree School of Art in 1924. Emeree exhibited her paintings of the West and western life at the Texas Fine Art Association, Austin; Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe; International Museum, El Paso; Fort Worth Museum of Art; Southern States Art League; Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition, San Antonio. Her work is in the collections of the Carnegie Public Library, Fort Worth, Texas; and Bowie High School, El Paso.

Signed lower left Signed and titled verso A vibrant Regionalist still life of bluebonnets in a multicolor vase. This painting retains the Popular Dry Goods Inc. El Paso label. The Popular Dry Goods department store was organized in 1902 by Adolph Schwartz. It was the largest locally-owned retail store in El Paso until its closure in 1995. Providing jobs and "high fashion" to both sides of the border, the store remained a cultural economic force in El Paso for ninety-three years. Most El Paso artists showed or sold their art through the store. Exhibited: Popular Dry Goods (label attached verso)

In Texas she studied with Jose Arpa, Xavier Gonzalez, and Rolla Taylor. Known for her adventurous spirit, Emeree was fearless in traveling alone in her car, camping out in the open in often dangerous areas. She was known to finance her adventures by trading her paintings for gasoline or food.

The thick paint echos the texture of a real stucco wall. The red clay roof tiles and the red flowers in the garden provide an accent of warm color to balance the cool blues of the front door and shadows.
