    Robert Elwes (1819-1878) A MOUNTAIN GORGE WITH A CAMEL TRAIN, AN ARTIST SKETCHING IN THE FOREGROUND (THE GORGE OF EL KANTARA, ALGERIA) Signed with monogram, dated 1871, oil on canvas 170 x 122cm; and a companion, A GORGE WITH TWO ARABS IN THE FOREGROUND AND A VILLAGE IN THE DISTANCE (CONSTANTINE, ALGERIA) Signed with monogram, inscribed Conslaw, dated 1873, oil on canvas 160 x 95cm (2) Provenance: Ryston Hall, Norfolk Exhibited: Lynn Art Loan Exhibition, Oct 1885 Robert Elwes was born in Gloucestershire, but settled in Longham House near Kings Lynn with his wife in the 1850s. Unfortunately, following a disastrous fire in 1939, only one wing now remains, and most of Elwes' work and records were lost. Elwes was an inveterate traveller and is now probably best remembered for the journal of his first round the world journey, undertaken between 1848 and 1850, and published as 'A Sketcher's Tour Round the World' in 1853.
