      Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Celestial. Jan Barend Elwe, Sterre Kaert of Hemels Pleyn, waer door men Kan Wete Hoe Laet dat het is Over de Gehele Aertkloot, op Alle Meridiane en Polus Hoogte..., 1792 (circa). Hand Color. This large map is one of the most unusual Dutch celestial charts. It shows the constellations of both the northern and southern hemispheres on a single rectangular projection. The constellations are depicted as though looking down on the earth from beyond the stars, so many of the figures are drawn with their backs turned. A chart of measurements organized by the zodiac is below the chart. Cherubs support a small cartouche within the chart (Door Dit Hemels Pleyn…) This chart is the work of Remmet Teunisse Backer from circa 1684. It was issued by several publishers throughout the eighteenth century. This is the last state with Elwe's imprint added in the chart and Johannes de Ram's imprint barely visible below the bottom neatline.

L'Afrique Divisee en ses Empires, Royaumes, et Etats...

      Est: $500 - $650

This handsome, large map of Africa was copied from Jaillot's popular and influential map from more than a century earlier (1674). The cartography is typical for the seventeenth century with the Nile originating in two large lakes below the equator. The River Zaire (Congo) also arises from Lake Zaire. The Kingdom of Monomotapa is shown with its capital on the "Rio de Spirito Santa", and "Vigiti Magna" is also depicted. The map is richly embellished, also in the seventeenth century style, with two elaborate cartouches featuring allegorical figures and wild animals.
