      Est: $60,000 - $80,000

Stephen Elmer (British 1717-1796 ) "the politician: dr. benjamin franklin" Signed and dated, "1780," framed. Together with two engravings after the portrait, "The Politician, engraved by T. Ryder, Published as the Act directs May 1st 1782 by T. Ryder & Sold by A. Torre & I. Thane No 28 Hay Market" and "The Politician (Dr. Benjamin Franklin) engraved by T. Ryder, the original plate Re: published July 1, 1824 by Z. Sweet 38 Chancery Lane." 30 in. x 25 in. PROVENANCE: Collection of Stuart E. Karu By inheritance to artist's nephew, William Elmer, 1796; offered by him for sale at "Elmer's Sportsman's Exhibition," Haymarket, London, 1799. William H. Huntington, New York, donated by him to Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1885; deaccessioned 1956; purchased by Prosper Guerry; by inheritance George P. Guerry; purchased from him by Edward Eberstadt & Sons, New York, before 1962; Kennedy Galleries, New York; later 1960's. Private Collection. Publication history: This painting was engraved by Thomas Ryder as "The Politician/Published as the Act directs May 1, 1782, by T. Ryder and Sold by A. Torre and J. Thane, No. 28 Hay Market." A second version of the engraving was published as the frontispiece to "The Life and Works of Benjamin Franklin", London, 1815. The painting is discussed at length in Charles Coleman Seller's "Benjamin Franklin in Portraiture" (1962), p 277-280. Seller comments that a possible source for the portrait is an engraving published in "Political Magazine and Parlimentary, Naval and Literary Journal" October ,1780 accompanying a highly critical "Life and Character of Dr. Franklin " the "author and encourager of the American rebellion." Seller notes that a replica or early copy of this portrait is in the U.S. Embassy, Paris.
