        Est: $100 - $1,000

Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Life of John F. Kennedy - Cuban Missile Crisis" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Cuban Missile Crisis stamp issued May 29, 1995. On October 14, 1962, an overflight of Cuba by a U.S. U-2 spy plane revealed the presence of a Soviet-made ballistic missile and a number of launch sites under construction. For President John F. Kennedy it was the beginning of a two-week-long test of will. Putting himself against cunning Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, the young president announced on October 22 a "quarantine'' of shipping to Cuba. In the days that followed, tension rose and Americans waited for word that the many fallout shelters constructed during the 1950s would have to be put to use. But finally, on October 28, their worst fears were allayed. Khrushchev announced that "The Soviet government ... has given a new order to dismantle the arms which you described as offensive, and to crate and return them to Soviet Russia." This painting was originally published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55? PT-109 stamp issued May 29, 1995. On August 2, 1943, Lieutenant John F. Kennedy was commanding a U.S. Navy patrol boat in the Solomon Islands when it was split in half by a Japanese destroyer. The collision killed two of his 12 crewmen instantly. One of the more severely wounded, Patrick McMahon, was unable to swim to the relative security of the floating wreckage. Kennedy dragged McMahon to safety and then swam out again to retrieve a second crewman. Fortunately, the survivors of PT-109 spotted an island in the distance. Towing McMahon on his back, Kennedy swam toward land, finally reaching shore after five hours. Six days passed before the message "Native knows posit he can pilot 11 alive need small boat Kennedy" -carve into a coconut shell -- reached fellow Americans. • Dean Ellis (1920 - 2009) "Robert E. Lee"
        Jun. 04, 2023

        Dean Ellis (1920 - 2009) "Robert E. Lee"

        Est: $100 - $1,000

Dean Ellis (American, 1920 - 2009) "Robert E. Lee" Signed middle right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. Distinguished in family, in presence, and in character, he seemed to have every virtue. His father was the famous "Lighthorse Harry" Lee of Revolutionary fame. His wife was the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. He presided over a magnificent Arlington estate. He went through West Point without a single demerit and served with distinction in the Mexican War. He was -- almost inevitably -- Superintendent of West Point Academy. Robert E. Lee was, indeed, an ardent patriot, devoted to the Union. But when Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter, Lee made the only decision he could, siding with his home state and the cause of its people. But, throughout the war, he was free of any private hostility. He referred to the Union troops as "those people," not the enemy. As Commander in Chief of the Army of Northern Virginia, he proved himself a brilliant combat general and skillful strategist, loved by subordinates and soldiers alike. "I would go through Hell for General Lee," Stonewall Jackson said. Against odds sometimes of two to one, Lee repeatedly took the offensive, and shattered one Union Army after another. "It is well war is so terrible," he said, "else we should get too fond of it." When he was forced to surrender, Lee bade farewell to those who had been "faithful to the last." "Take satisfaction in the consciousness of duty faithfully performed," he said. After his retirement, Lee was appointed President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. This painting is the original painting which was published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Peace Corps stamp issued May 29, 1995. While speaking at the University of Michigan, President John F. Kennedy initially proposed the idea of the Peace Corps. So enamored were the students with Kennedy's suggestion that they soon presented him with a petition listing several hundred individuals willing to volunteer. When Kennedy later spoke to Congress, the idea had crystallized: "I recommend to the Congress the establishment of a permanent Peace Corps, a pool of trained American men and women sent overseas by the U.S. Government or through private organizations and institutions to help foreign countries meet their urgent needs for skilled manpower. The initial emphasis of these programs will be on teaching." Kennedy went onto say that he opened other countries would join his cause and improve understanding among nations." Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original paiting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Northern Sea Lion stamp issued October 3, 1990. From the Soviet Union's Sea of Okhotsk to California's San Miguel Island, the month of May rings with the deep-throated roar of the Northern or Steller Sea Lion. May is the season when the huge bulls gather on isolated rocky shorelines to fight for a home territory and to gather harems of ten to twenty cows. The Steller Sea Lion is the largest of its family, with the males often attaining a weight of 2,000 pounds -- three times as much as their mates. A shy animal, the Steller Sea Lion requires breeding ground far from the reaches of man. Today, some 250,000 sea lions live and breed on the rocky shorelines of Alaska, Russia and British Columbia where they eat a wide variety of marine life, primarily fish. Image Size: 17.5 x 15.25 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. John Kennedy was already an admired national figure when he was elected to the Presidency in 1960. He had commanded a PT boat in World War II and was decorated for bravery; he served in Congress for three terms; he defeated Henry Cabot Lodge in 1952 for a seat in the Senate; then won the Presidency by the narrowest majority since 1880. Almost everything about him fired America's imagination. He was the first President born in the twentieth century, the youngest ever to be elected, and the first Catholic to win the Presidency. He brought to his office not only personal charm, but a generous humanitarianism, a political maturity, and a luminous intelligence. Kennedy championed those policies and philosophies which Franklin Roosevelt had inaugurated. He had some success with a program of urban renewal, and with his campaign for a broader interpretation of the "equal protection" clause of the Constitution and the extension of civil rights for Blacks. Around the world Kennedy was viewed as a statesman who combined patience with ardor, compassion with courage, and poetry with power. That is what he had called for in a moving address at Amherst College: "I look forward to a great future for America ... I look forward to an America which will reward achievement in the arts as we reward achievement in business or statecraft ... And I look forward to an America which commands respect throughout the world not only for its strength, but for its civilization as well. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Overall Size: 24 x 27 in. Unframed. Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Booker T. Washington" Signed upper left. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. Booker T. Washington was born in 1856 to a slave mother and a white father. Emancipation brought him the opportunity for education. As a young boy, though he worked rough jobs during the day, he managed to partake of that opportunity, learning at night from friendly teachers and from a well-worn copy of Webster's "Blue-Back Speller." At seventeen, Washington heard of the New Hampton Institute for Colored Youth and walked five hundred miles to get there. Once there, he persuaded the superintendent to admit him and, within a few years, Washington was a teacher himself. In 1881, Washington was asked to open a school in Alabama to train black students for farming and other occupations. Unfortunately, when he arrived, the school was more a promise than a reality. But, with unrivaled energy and vision, he built up the neglected quarters, acquired hundreds of acres of rich farm land, and attracted support from wealthy Northerners like Andrew Carnegie and Collis P. Huntington. By the 1890s, Booker T. Washington had earned a national reputation. In 1893, the southern states held a Cotton States Exposition at Atlanta, and it was Washington they asked to speak for Blacks. His address made history. "In all things that are purely social," he said on the question of race relations, "we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to progress." Washington summed up his life in the inspiring autobiography, Up From Slavery. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Overall Size: 24 x 27 in. Unframed. (B11400)

        Est: $300 - $600

Dean Ellis (1920 - 2009) "History of the Marshall Islands Japan - Seizes Islands from Germany WWI" Titled lower margin. Original Oil Painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Marshall Islands Seized by Japan, 1914 stamp issued May 2, 1996. Although the Marshall Islands were officially recognized as an Imperial German Protectorate in 1885, Japanese traders and business interests continued to make significant inroads in the region. Politically, Japan had long been interested in establishing predominance over the Marshalls and its opportunity came in August 1914 with the outbreak of World War I. Entering the war on the side of the Allies, Japan quickly sent troops to subdue German forces and occupy the islands. The Paris Peace Conference of 1919 affirmed this occupation and the Marshall Islands were assigned to Japan under a League of Nations mandate. Japan soon incorporated the area into its empire, removing all but a few Westerners and eliminating foreign commerce. It was the dawn of a dark era for the Marshall Islands as they were gradually converted into a supply source fueling Japanese aggression. Image Size: 11.5 x 15 in. Overall Size: 14 x 16 in. Unframed. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Marshall Islands Becomes U.N. Trust Territory, 1947 stamp issued May 2, 1996. World War II catastrophically upset the lives of the people of the Marshall Islands, and dramatically changed their perceptions of the world and their places in it. The aftermath of the conflict found the Marshalls suffering from various degrees of devastation and want. Food and medical supplies were either scarce or nonexistent; communications and services were disrupted; many islanders had been displaced; boats and structures had been destroyed; savings invested in Japanese banks were wiped out; bombardment had even depopulated the reefs of marine life. A long-range redevelopment plan was clearly needed and it came in April 1947 when the United Nations Security Council approved a trusteeship agreement for the Marshall Islands designating the United States as the administrative authority. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Mercury stamp issued July 20, 1994. The planet Mercury orbits so near the Sun that many ancient astronomers -- including Copernicus -- never saw it. Because it appears and disappears at will, it was named after the fleet-footed Roman god Mercury, who the ancients believed influenced travel, trade, thievery and invention. Because of its smaller mass, a 150-pound Earthling visiting Mercury would weigh only 55 pounds. Within the past few years, through the findings of Mariner 10, we've learned a great deal about this planet. It has even been suggested that a mobile space station be established on Mercury's slowly rotating equator to study the solar system and the universe. This remarkable painting depicts Mercury's astrological sign symbolizing youth and good looks, and captures the messenger of the gods leading souls to the nether world with his lighted caduceus. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Collectors Panel for the Isle of Man -- Royal National Lifeboat Institute stamp issue of March 4, 1999. In 1802, the first lifeboat station on the Isle of Man was constructed at Douglas Bay. Established in 1824, the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) is a private and voluntarily supported organization providing and manning lifeboats and other rescue craft all along the coasts of the British Isles. Lifeboat volunteers are extensively trained at the RNLI headquarters. Topics include radar, radio and satellite navigation, capsize drills, night exercises, helicopter winching practice and emergency beaching. Sir William Hillary led lifeboat crews that saved over 300 lives. Hillary's "Appeal to the Nation," decrying the misery caused by so many shipwreck deaths, led to the foundation of the modern lifeboat. On March 4, 1824, the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was formed. In 1854, the name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Image Size: 20 x 15.75 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c The Sun stamp issued July 20, 1994. Among the ancients, the Sun took the place of a supreme deity. It was called Ra by the ancient Egyptians, Mithras by the Persians, and Apollo by the early Greeks, who believed it was set in a crystal sphere -- along with the Moon and stars -- that rotated around the Earth. It took men like Galileo, Kepler, Brahe and Newton to open the doors to modern astronomy and the Sun we understand today. Even so, the source of the Sun's enormous energy was a mystery for centuries. Not until the 1930s did it become apparent to scientists that some form of nuclear energy must be what was keeping the Sun burning for billions of years. This exciting painting shows the Sun's astrological sign symbolizing power and wealth, and Apollo, the Greek god of light and prophecy, thundering across the heavens in a horse-drawn chariot. Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Roman Goddess Venus" Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Venus stamp issued July 20, 1994. The planet Venus is so bright it can sometimes be seen during the day, if you know where to look. Today, scientists know that Venus has little water, high winds and extremely high air pressure. But in many ways, it is still a mystery. The exact composition of its atmosphere is uncertain and we do not know why it rotates so slowly or why the same side always faces us when it is closest to Earth. We can only guess at the planet's internal composition. The ancient Greeks called Venus Phosphorus when seen as the morning star, and Hesperus when seen as the evening star. Not until the sixth century A.D. was it determined that the two were the same. Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. This painting depicts Venus' astrological sign symbolizing harmony and artistry, and captures Venus in all her serene loveliness. Image Size: 12.25 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 15.75 x 18.75 in. Cutliffe Hyne's novel, Lost Continent, Ballantine Books, 1972. "The Lost Continent was C. J. Cutliffe Hyne's most famous fantastic novel. This is the best of several novels published in the wake of Ignatius Donnelly's Atlantis: the Antediluvian World (1882), which popularized the mythology of the sunken continent for Victorian readers. With tongue slightly in cheek, Hyne treated the myth as it really deserved to be treated -- as a grandiose exercise in imaginative sensationalism." - Brian Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950. A copy of the book is included in this lot. From the Frank Collection.
