SIGHT SIZE: 15 x 20 inches / 38 x 50 cm BOARD SIZE: 24 x 24 inches / 60 x 60 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: Carnivores -- on land and in the sea -- have felt the wrath of mankind throughout history. The beautiful black and white Killer Whale is no exception to this rule. The largest of the porpoise family, the Killer Whale has obtained a bad reputation as willing to eat anything in sight including, sometimes, man himself. Even the whale's name is a reflection of that claim. However, the last three decades have drawn a more accurate picture of the strikingly-marked whale. Today, Orcinus orca is found in aquariums throughout the world, where thousands are enthralled by the animal's intelligence and gentleness. Est: $100 - $1,000

Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Jefferson Davis" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. A graduate of West Point, Jefferson Davis had fought in the Black Hawk War and served with distinction in the Mexican War. He served as Secretary of War under President Pierce and President Zachary Taylor. Kentucky born, he moved to Mississippi and there served as Congressman, Senator, and then returned to the Senate to be the leading spokesman for States Rights. When the seceding States met at Montgomery, Alabama to establish the Confederate States of America, they chose Davis as President of the new nation. As a wartime president, he was respected, and proved to be as able, decisive, wise in his choice of generals and of diplomats as could be expected. But, under the Confederate Constitution, he was unable to impose national law or use the judiciary system in the absence of a Supreme Court. Inevitably all of his -- and the South's -- expectations were disappointed: Britain did not intervene, the North rallied around Lincoln; internal lines of communication did not allow the vastly outnumbered Confederates to shift their forces easily and, most importantly, Lincoln finally found generals -- Grant and Sherman -- who could hold their own with Lee and his lieutenants. After Appomattox, Davis sought to flee, but was captured and briefly imprisoned for treason. But he was never brought to trial. He spent his last years writing a history of the Confederate States of America. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Overall Size: 24 x 27 in. Unframed. (B10591)

While speaking at the University of Michigan, President John F. Kennedy initially proposed the idea of the Peace Corps. So enamored were the students with Kennedy's suggestion that they soon presented him with a petition listing several hundred individuals willing to volunteer. When Kennedy later spoke to Congress, the idea had crystallized: "I recommend to the Congress the establishment of a permanent Peace Corps, a pool of trained American men and women sent overseas by the U.S. Government or through private organizations and institutions to help foreign countries meet their urgent needs for skilled manpower. The initial emphasis of these programs will be on teaching." Kennedy went onto say that he opened other countries would join his cause and improve understanding among nations." By the late 18th century, the Pacific region had witnessed the rise and fall of the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch. Then Great Britain began to take its place in the Sun both commercially and politically. In the 1780s, numerous British naval vessels and merchantmen of the British East India Company were stopping over in the Central Pacific islands on their way to China. The British First Fleet arrived in Australia in 1788 carrying a cargo of 700 convicts destined for the penal colony to be established there. Having discharged the prisoners, the First Fleet dispersed, with most ships striking north toward China. However, Captain John Marshall, commanding the Scarborough, sailed east on a course that would take him through the archipelago that he charted, and which now bears his name -- the Marshall Islands. SIGHT SIZE: 9 x 15 inches / 22 x 38 cm BOARD SIZE: 11 x 17 inches / 28 x 43 cm SIGNATURE: unsigned but has publishing house labels on verso NOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c British Captain John Marshall Charts Islands, 1788 stamp issued May 2, 1996. By the late 18th century, the Pacific region had witnessed the rise and fall of the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch. Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Roman God Mars" Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Mars stamp issued July 20, 1994. Named for the Roman god of war -- the legendary father of Romulus and Remus through Rhea Silvia -- the planet Mars has a brilliant red color that symbolizes fire and blood. Ancient philosophers believed this planet to be the cause of dissension, strife, quarrels and battles. A number of space missions to Mars have made the planet nearly as familiar to us as the Moon. Huge dust storms occur there, causing wind erosion and sedimentation. Although water doesn't exist on Mars as a liquid, large amounts of ice cover its north pole. Seasons on the red planet are twice as long as those on Earth because the Martian orbital period is two years. This spectacular painting depicts Mars' astrological sign symbolizing courage and invincibility, and captures the Roman god Mars with a spear and shield about to go into battle. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c British Captain John Marshall Charts Islands, 1788 stamp issued May 2, 1996. By the late 18th century, the Pacific region had witnessed the rise and fall of the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. Among the true heroes of American agriculture none was more creative, or more productive, than George Washington Carver. Born of slave parents in 1864, he lived all his life in freedom, but with a consciousness that his parents had been slaves and, so too, many of the Black sharecroppers of the post-war era. Carver was educated at the Iowa State Agricultural College; his work won him appointment to its faculty upon his graduation. In 1896, he was called to head up the new agricultural department at the Tuskegee Institute. It was there that he sought to improve the welfare of the Southern tenant farmers, Black and White alike. He devoted himself exclusively to research. He displayed a genius for breeding new crops. He was largely responsible for realizing the potential of the peanut. This heretofore neglected plant became, in a few years, the South's most profitable crop after cotton. From the peanut, the sweet potato and cotton, Carver developed no less than four hundred synthetic materials including dyes, soap, cheese and -- from wood shavings -- a synthetic marble. Carver even increased cotton productivity by producing a hybrid cotton -- named after him -- with much larger bolls. Throughout his distinguished career, Carver remained devoted to Tuskegee, where he not only continued productive research, but also trained a generation of agronomists. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. In many ways, John D. Rockefeller represented, and expressed, the dominant forces in post Civil War America. Rockefeller saw that the fabulous natural resources of the continent would provide a foundation for its industrial power. So, he devoted himself single-mindedly to the development of the oil industry, bringing economic and fiscal order out of what had been competitive chaos. He built empires based on the naton's natural resources, creating large companies which eventually became trusts. Indeed, Rockefeller's company, Standard Oil, became the first "Trust," meaning that one board of trustees administered not only the parent company, but affiliated companies as well -- companies that extracted the raw material, transported and refined it, and then sold it both wholesale and retail. Order was achieved. But by the 1880s, people were becoming concerned by monopolies thus created, and anti-trust legislation sought to restore competition to the marketplace. "Robber Barons" they might have been, but it is interesting to note that most of those names associated with the great wealth amassed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century are associated, too, with philanthropy. Rockefeller was no exception. Having founded a dynasty, he began a foundation with the formal mandate to "promote the well-being of mankind throughout the world." He gave hundreds of millions of dollars to medical research, and created two universities. This Cover honors John D. Rockefeller, a man who helped shape America. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Saturn stamp issued July 20, 1994. The most striking thing about Saturn is its four thin rings, composed mostly of small independent particles that lie in the plane of the planet's equator and extend from 46,000 to 85,000 miles from its center. Saturn also has 10 satellites large enough to be observed. One of the satellites, Titan, is nearly the size of the planet Mercury and the only satellite in the solar system known to have any appreciable atmosphere, which consists primarily of methane. The most distant of the visible planets, Saturn was named for the Roman god of agriculture. The planet's sluggish movements probably reminded ancient skywatchers of the slow gait of plowing oxen or grazing cattle. This intriguing painting shows Saturn resting quietly with a wheat cutter in hand, as well as the astrological sign symbolizing patience and self-discipline. Image Size: 12.75 x 15.75 in.
