Peter Ellenshaw Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, b. 1913 - d. 2007

Artist Peter Ellenshaw was a special-effects matte painter for the Disney studio, winning an Academy Award for Best Special Effects on the film Mary Poppins. After his career at Disney, he devoted his life to painting landscapes and seascapes. Peter Ellenshaw paintings include both acrylics and oils on canvas, and he produced hand-signed prints, including a suite of 50 giclee on canvas of Winnie the Pooh.

As an artist, Peter Ellenshaw’s style bridged Realism and Impressionism. His landscapes ranged from deserts to mountains to woodland fields. His seascapes draw some of the finest praise, and they alternate between thunderous waves crashing against huge coastal boulders and calm, low tides at dusk and dawn and in the moonlight.

Limited-edition Peter Ellenshaw prints are highly collectible. His panoramic, cloud-filled seascape paintings are prized, and have received awards from prestigious museums and societies. Other fine seascape paintings for sale are also available at Invaluable.

Whether in film or in the arena of fine art, Ellenshaw was incredibly skilled in capturing a moment, tone, and feeling with his paint brush. As a longtime film maker, Ellenshaw's clients included Walt Disney, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Michael Powell and W. Percy Day. He was an Academy Award winning special effects artist, a motion picture production designer, a concept illustrator and an official 'Disney Legend.' In tandem with his successful commercial art career, Peter Ellenshaw was represented by the prestigious Hammer Galleries in New York. At Hammer, Ellenshaw found great popularity and success with his landscape paintings—from his iconic sweeping Californian seascapes, to his dramatic interpretations of Irish cliffs to the idyllic peace found in Monet's gardens. First created in 1991, In Their Glory celebrates New York City's skyline. However, the artist was reworked the painting by illuminating the iconic image with fireworks for the Millennium Celebration in 1999. Here, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center take center stage, as Lady Liberty shines her torch proudly in the foreground. The message in this painting is clear: It is often during our nation's darkest hours that our spirit shines the brightest. In response to the terrorist attacks in 2001, the artist published 10,911 limited edition prints of In Their Glory. The edition quickly sold out, with all proceeds benefiting the Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows and Children's Fund to aid the families of firefighters lost on September 11, 2001. Since 1948, Walt and Lillian Disney had vacationed at their Palm Springs home in Smoke Tree Ranch. In the 1960's Walt Disney asked Peter if he had ever painted the desert to which he replied that the desert did not attract him, it was just dry sand. Walt didn't let him get away with that and invited him down to their house. Peter enjoyed the beauty to be found inland and, thus, began a new interest. This is one of Peter's desert paintings from that time period. "I did enjoy the challenge and soon discovered the desert to be full of wonderful things to paint.             This is a signed original oil painting by Peter Ellenshaw (British/American, 1913-2007). The painting features a moonlit seashore scene with the surf breaking along rocks. It is signed on the lower left corner and seems to be dated for 1967. Ellenshaw was a matte designer and special effects creator who worked on many Disney features including Treasure Island, and Mary Poppins. The frame is 36 x 22 1/2" with a sight view of 29 1/4 x 15 1/4". The stretcher is 30 x 16".

            Peter Ellenshaw (1913 - 2007) Desert Near San Jacinto Oil on Canvas. Depicting a scene of the White Sand Desert near San Jacinto Mountain. Artist hand signed on lower left, artist stamp on reverse, along with Hammer Galleries, New York, New York no. 21398. Peter Ellenshaw, whose artistic career spanned more than seven decades, was a seascape and landscape painting and also a longtime film maker whose clients included Walt Disney, Stanley Kubrick, Michael Powell and W. Percy Day. He was an Academy Award winning special effects artist, a motion picture production designer, a concept illustrator and an official 'Disney Legend.' It was in the 50s that Peter fell in love with the ocean and would spend weekends painting the picturesque coves and crashing waves along the California coast. He also began a lifelong association with the Hammer Galleries in New York. In 1993, Peter Ellenshaw was officially designated a 'Disney Legend' at the Walt Disney Studios in a ceremony presided over by CEO Michael Eisner and Roy E. Disney. It was shortly thereafter that he was commissioned to do paintings of scenes from famous Disney features.
