          Byzantine Gold Mount of a Saint

          Late 10th-early 11th century AD. A teardrop-shaped gold cloisonné mount with facing nimbate figure, much of the original enamel infill in situ, four plaques with Greek crosses to the field. 1.21 grams, 26mm (1"). Ex central London gallery since 2004; previously with Elie Borowski, 1988; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no. 10550-170745.

Inscribed to the French-American writer Marguerite Yourcenar by her artist friend Grekoff, who designed the decor and costumes for her play Electra: "en souvenir amicale de nos recontres sympathiques, cette image de L'Enfer de Patrice de la Tour du Pin. E. Grekoff, 7-1952." La Tour du Pin's poem was published in 1949 with lithographs by Grekoff. The artist had studied under Léger, but this drawing shows the influence of Cocteau.
