        MIYAO EISUKE: A SUPERB PAIR OF PARCEL GILT MIXED-METAL CANDLESTICKS DEPICTING ACROBATS By Miyao Eisuke of Yokohama, each signed Miyao sei Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) Each finely cast in three parts, depicting young acrobats balancing a taiko drum and with shishimai (lion dance) masks atop their heads, the details finely chiseled and inlaid in gilt takazogan and hirazogan, the faces and hands in copper, the drums incised with chrysanthemums, peonies, and with karakusa details, each signed MIYAO sei [made by Miyao] in a typical rectangular reserve, one further signed MIYAO sei to the gold fan. HEIGHT each 43 cm WEIGHT 3,330 g and 3,837 g Condition: Very good condition with little wear, small nicks, light surface scratches, few minor dents, rubbing to the gilding. Each presenting beautifully. Founded by Miyao Eisuke, the Miyao Company of Yokohama (later based in Nihonbashi-ku, Tokyo, after ca. 1890) specialized in the manufacture of bronze sculptures, embellished with gold and silver as well as patinated copper alloys, that represent generic samurai warriors as well as more precisely identifiable characters from Japanese myth and legend. In addition, the company also made a smaller number of pieces in other formats such as incense burners, vases, and chargers. Auction comparison: Compare a near-identical pair of bronze candlesticks, also by Miyao and 43.5 cm high, dated to the Meiji period, at Christie’s, The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection: Volume 3, English and European Furniture, Porcelain and Silver, Day Sale, 22 October 2022, New York, lot 306 (sold for USD 37,800).

        Ref1 MIYAO EISUKE: A MASSIVE, RARE AND VERY FINE PARCEL-GILT BRONZE TRIPOD KORO AND FIGURAL COVER By Miyao Eisuke of Yokohama, signed Miyao with seal Ei Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of compressed globular form on tripod feet issuing from dragon heads, the body carved with sinuously coiled dragons amid reishi-shaped clouds as well as two gilt-rimmed roundels in high relief, one with a tiger in a rocky landscape in front of a pine tree, the other with a crane flanked by an immortal holding a fan and an oni carrying a double-gourd flask. The neck with two phoenix handles and carved with two phoenixes as well. The domed cover with a figural group on top depicting a young boy wearing an elaborately decorated robe and hat, trying to hold back a dog that has caught a small bird in its mouth, the boy watching the struggle with great curiosity in his eyes. Signed MIYAO with seal Ei on the boy’s back within a gilt rectangular reserve. Note the masterful craftsmanship, particularly evident in the many finely gilt details as well as the slight nuances in patination, creating a mesmerizing composition. HEIGHT 44.5 cm WEIGHT 9.6 kg Condition: Excellent condition with only few minor traces of wear. Provenance: British collection.         MIYAO EISUKE: A BRONZE ‘SAMURAI’ CANDLESTICK By Miyao Eisuke of Yokohama, signed Miyao with seal Ei Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Signed MIYAO on a gilt rectangular reserve with seal Ei. The heavily cast, gilt and incised bronze figure stands on its en suite lacquered wood stand. The Samurai is dressed in a palatial robe with various gilt family crests over a large apron with thick tassels at the bottom that looks like a kesho-mawashi, normally worn only by sumo wrestlers. A tanto is tucked through his sash as he holds the removable blossom-shaped candleholder. HEIGHT 30.3 cm (including the stand) WEIGHT 1823.7 grams (including the stand) Condition: Superb condition with only minor wear and traces of use. The stand with some abrasions, minute chipping and age cracks. The warrior may have once held something in his proper right hand, which is now missing. Provenance: From an English private collection.

        MIYAO EISUKE: A RARE AND VERY FINE BRONZE KORO By Miyao Eisuke of Yokohama, signed Miyao Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The incense burner of rounded, rectangular form raised on four elegant inome shaped feet with a stepped neck. The sides applied with imposing dragon-head handles. The slightly domed en suite cover with gilt and incised auspicious objects in relief and a handle vividly modelled as a boy blowing a trumpet. The body cast with panels of a butterfly amid chrysanthemums and a warrior firing an oversized tanegashima rifle while two others are taking cover. The artist signature MIYAO is found in a gilt reserve to the back of the boy. HEIGHT 19.8 cm WEIGHT 1470.2 grams Condition: Superb condition with only minor wear and traces of use. Even the copper inset for the incense is original and still fits perfectly into the vessel! Provenance: From an English private collection. Tanegashima was a matchlock configured firearm introduced to Japan through the Portuguese in 1543. It was used by the samurai class and their foot soldiers (ashigaru) and within a few years the introduction of the tanegashima in battle forever changed the way war was fought in Japan.
