Rereading Oliver Twist from Fagin's point of view, Will Eisner shows us in a new light and with unprecedented depth one of the most infamous characters in the history of literature. Eisner proves once again that he is not only a master in the art of comics, but also an acute literary critic and a careful observer of society. Eisner depicts the evil Fagin as a complex and tormented individual, and through his story he represents the life of the Ashkenazi community in 19th-century London: a provocative look at the poverty, prejudice and anti-Semitism of the time, a memorable historical reflection, a narrative through images of rare evocative power. Copyrighted 1977. Hard cover portfolio measures approximately 16.5 inches X just over 12.25 inches. Hard cover portfolio and all plates appear to be in good condition overall and no imperfections were noticed when picturing.

Will Eisner - The Spirit - Il Duce’s Locket, 1947

pencil and ink on thin cardboard Original comic art made by Eisner for the page 4 of "Il Duce's Locket", an adventure by The Spirit published for the first time in American newspapers on 25 May 1947. A police commissioner holds a photo depicting Mussolini hanging in Piazzale Loreto. A certain Signor Bandito (an Italian adventurer) gave it to him. According to the Italian, a medallion containing a map to the Duce's treasure fell from Mussolini's pockets. He was taken by P'Gell, a dark lady enemy of Spirit. The hunt for the medallion begins, involving P'Gell, Bandito, the ex-fascist Stiletto and Spirit (who will obviously win). This is the plot of "Il Duce's Locket" (the title is an unusual mix of Italian and English) in which Eisner uses the classic stereotypical characterization for Italians, all criminals who express themselves in an ungrammatical English that recalls the Italian pronunciation, like on this page where the name "Spirit" becomes "Speerito". Pin holes at the top margin. A museum piece.

Issue de la « Trilogie New Yorkaise » de Will Eisner, cette planche raconte comment une grille d’aération de la célèbre avenue C a récolté au cours des années de nombreux objets du quotidien. Ici, l’instrument d’un meurtre que deux enfants récupèrent innocemment et finissent par se disputer. Le théâtre joue un grand rôle dans la narration : un plan fixe, une scène muette, exécutée avec des lavis subtils, et pas un policier pour regarder vers le bas, sous leurs pieds. « L’essence même de la ville se trouve dans les crevasses de son sol et dans les recoins de son architecture, explique pourtant l’auteur en préface de cet ouvrage, là où le quotidien s’insinue… »

Sept planches à la suite du Spirit de Will Eisner : un lot absolument unique en son genre ! Le Spirit, c’est l’une des bases de toute la bande dessinée américaine d’après-guerre. L’auteur y développe une véritable esthétique du noir et blanc qui fera école. Observez la vie qui se dégage naturellement de cet ensemble. La délicatesse de l’encrage est à elle seule une leçon de dessin. Le pinceau d’Eisner caresse la feuille. Léger, aérien, lumineux, il donne aux visages une gamme d’expressions insoupçonnées et épouse sur les matières tous les effets de la lumière. Les trames mécaniques utilisées dans certaines cases donnent plus encore de diversité à l’ensemble du travail. L’auteur tente sans cesse de trouver les meilleurs angles pour assurer les effets de sa narration. Au plus près des visages à certains moments, il peut lorsque la situation le justifie, passer à des plans larges extrêmement inventifs comme les deux dernières cases des sixième et septième planches.

Will Eisner needs no introduction, but to the uninitiated, he was one of the original fathers of the comic strip and pioneer of the narrative comic form. This piece, published by Denis Kitchen in his Spirit series, features a cast of characters including “The Spirit”, “Commissioner Dolan”, “Ebony”, and “Ellen Dolan”.
