Watercolor and pencil with white heightening on cream wove paper, 1863. 334x156 mm; 13 1/4x6 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto. Provenance: Private collection, Austria; private collection, New York. This work dates from the artist's time at the Vienna Academy from 1860-64. Eichler was a Viennese artist whose study trips to Rome and Munich influenced his academic style. His altarpieces, genre and landscapes recall traditional history paintings with their grandeur and carefully wrought details.
