Albert Eichhorn(Freienwalde/Brandenburg 1811-1851 Potsdam) In the Roman Countryside, signed and dated A. Eichhorn Roma (18)40 (covered by the frame), oil on painter's board, 26 x 35.5 cm framed, (Rei)Albert Eichhorn Attended school in Berlin; trained first as an architect; autodidact. By practising on nature-inspired oil studies, Eichhorn developed his skills as a painter. He studied in Berlin under Karl Edouard Biermann (among others). He travelled to Greece and Rome in 1840-42 under the protection of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia (he was one of the first Berlin painters in Berlin by appointment to the King). There he became enduringly influenced by the ancient ruins. After his return the King became a regular client. In order to complete his substantial commissions, Eichhorn was required to travel between Berlin and Potsdam between 1844 and 1848, where he worked on the King's residences. Only in his early works does Eichhorn paint landscapes from his home region of Oderbruch; he remains faithful to his artistic roots, the ancient Greek and Roman traditions.
