        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

John Whetten Ehninger (American, 1827–1889) A Break in the Day Signed 'J.W. Ehninger' bottom right, oil on canvas 14 5/8 x 19 3/4 in. (37.1 x 50.2cm) Provenance Kendall Chew and John Formicola, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Acquired from the above in 1997. Collection of Dr. Douglas S. Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. In good overall condition. A black spot of surface soiling is present at top left. Abrasions and wear are present at extreme edges where the canvas meets the frame. Inpainting is present in the horse's body, under male figure's arms, along the dog's spine, and scattered patches in bottom left and top right corners. A lime green varnish is present under UV light, inhibiting a thorough reading. It is believed that some of the fluoresence under UV light is the natural pigment of the paint rather than inpainting. See Specialist's photos for details. Frame: 21 1/4 x 26 5/8 x 2 1/4 in.

      • With seven Brady photographs

        With seven Brady photographs

        Est: $500 - $800

Heading: (Brady, Matthew) Author: Ehninger, John W. Title: Illustrations of Longfellow's Courtship of Miles Standish Photographs from the Original Drawings by Brady Place Published: New York Publisher:Rudd & Carleton Date Published: 1859 Description: With 7 of 8 mounted salt print photographs by Matthew Brady of Ehninger's drawings interleaved with a page of Longfellow's poem for each photograph. (Oblong folio) 23.6x29.8 cm (9¼x11¾"), brown blind-stamped morocco lettered in gilt on cover. Early Brady photographs, antedating those he took during the Civil War. The present copy is lacking the final photograph The Wedding Procession. These exhibition-size salt prints are of paintings by Ehninger, a "gifted and accomplished" painter famous for his bucolic genre studies of early American life [Harper's, April 1876, p. 703]. With the nation poised on the brink of Civil War, Brady's photographs of Ehninger's evocative paintings richly evoke Longfellow's tale of America's beginnings at Plymouth and his saga of the famous Puritan Captain Standish. Most paintings show Ehninger's signature and date. [NYPL Checklist 1977: 33. BAL 12121; Sabin 41908.] With an illustration of the pilgrims affixed to front pastedown. Previous owner's name stamped on title page.

        Dec. 15, 2009

        EHNINGER, JOHN WHETTON. 1827-1889.

        Est: -

Autograph Etchings by American Artists. New York: W.A. Townsend, 1859. Illustrated with 12 albumen prints, mounted. Folio (350 x 270 mm; images mostly 9 x 7 inches or smaller). Original roan, blindstamped and gilt lettered. Margin of text leaves waterstained, binding worn, upper cover near detached. First edition of probably the only nineteenth century American book with cliché-verres. The process involves applying an opaque layer to a sheet of glass (by smoking it, for example), then etching an image through that layer before printing onto light-sensitized paper. Fox Talbot experimented with the process in 1834, but it was not "re-discovered" until 1853. Popularized by Corot, the process is here used by A.B. Durand, E. Leutze, J.F. Kensett, F.O.C. Darley, J.W. Casilear, E. Johnson, S.R. Gifford, G.C. Lambdin, G. Boughton, W.P.W. Dana, L.R. Mignot and Ehninger himself. Provenance: Anna Wharton (gift inscription from her brother dated Christmas, 1859).
