Secretary of War - Map of Western America (New Mexico, Utah, Arizona) - Map of the Route pursued in 1849 by the US Troops under the command of Bvt. Lieut. Col. JNO. M. Washington…

            Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Full Title: Map of the Route pursued in 1849 by the US Troops under the command of Bvt. Lieut. Col. JNO. M. Washington, Governor of New Mexico, in an expedition against the Navajos Indians by James H. Simpson, 1st Lieutenant T. Eng. This first edition lithograph is from an important work on West Texas exploration entitled Reports of the Secretary of War, with Reconnaissances of Routes from San Antonio to El Paso; Also, the Report of Capt. R. B. Marcy's Route from Fort Smith to Santa Fe; And the Report of Lieut. J. H. Simpson of an Expedition into the Navajo Country; And the Report of Lieutenant W. H. C. Whiting's Reconnaissances of the Western Frontier of Texas. The work was created with contributions from J. E. Johnston, W. F. Smith, F. T. Bryan and more. The work was published and printed by the Union Office in 1850 in Washington, DC. The work documented the settlement into West Texas and New Mexico. These expeditions in the 1840s were essential to the expansion westward and the work depicted stage coach and military routes. It also illustrated natural lanscapes and Native American dress and customs. "There is much interesting matter in the reports relating to Indian tribes, then first visited, and the plates are principally illustrated of Indian life or aboriginal antiquities." (Sabin 36377) John H. Jenkins writes of the work: "This is a valuable compendium of reports of government explorations that led to the opening of West Texas to travel and settlement. [William] Goetzmann stated that, by these explorations, Johnston had been able 'to survey what was to be the most important supply route for the outer chain of defense posts, and he had also been able to gain some idea of the suitability of the terrain for a [southern transcontinental] railroad. [The surveys] provided official confirmation of a route across West Texas. These routes remained for years the main lines of communication for soldier, settler, and gold seeker alike.'" (Basic Texas Books; Jenkins Publishing Company, 1983, p. 290)
