        Beresford Egan,  British 1905–1984 -  Surreal head, 1949;  ink on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Beresford Egan 49', 26.6 x 13.2 cm: together with 1 other work on paper by the same artist, of a smaller size and similar subject (2) (ARR)  Provenance:  private collection;  Roseberys, London, Modern British & 20th Century Art, Tuesday 12th September 2023, lot 128 (part lot);  private collection, purchased from the above and thence by descent  Note:  Egan was a satirist, writer, costume designer and novelist, known for his work 'The Sink of Solitude, 1928' and illustrations to works by Pierre Louys and his wife Catherine Bower Alcock, inspired by the work of Aubrey Beardsley. While his early work was noted for its Art Deco style, these later pieces are perhaps more in keeping with the Surrealist-inspired forms of the Post-War period.

        Egan (Beresford) No Sense in Form, a Tragedy of Manners, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author "For Edith Templeton, Have I exhumed this memory that she may perform a post mortem, & which can have but one verdict - MURDER in all degrees. Beresford Egan 1951" on front free endpaper, followed by an ?unpublished poem below, original boards, spine faded, dust-jacket, short tear along upper joint, some nicks and chips to extremities and along joints, light surface staining to lower panel, 8vo, 1933. ⁂ Inscribed to Edith Templeton (1916-2006), who was a Bohemian novelist also known as her pseudonym Louise Walbrook.

(4) ⁂ Second with tipped-in letter reading "Dear Adrian [Woodhouse], did you ever see a more hideous hotchpotch that the dust-jacket on your pirated Pausole? It is even worse than the one the wretched Godwin wrapped round poor Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Man...for pity's sakegum this note in your copy of Godwin's Pausole that my spirit may rest in peace".
