Gerbrand van den Eeckhout was a notable Dutch painter of the Golden Age, renowned for his portraits, historical scenes, and biblical narratives. Born in Amsterdam, he was a pupil and close follower of Rembrandt van Rijn, whose influence is evident in Eeckhout's use of chiaroscuro and composition. Although not as famous as his mentor, Eeckhout's works exhibit a high degree of technical skill and emotional depth.

Ao 1670 Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, son of an Amsterdam goldsmith, was Rembrandt's favourite pupil and friend, as the art historiographer Arnold Houbraken reports. The fact that his works were sometimes mistaken for Rembrandt's can be taken as a proof of his great artistic ability. Looking at van den Eeckhout's œuvre, one notices his artistic versatility; he created mythological and religious history paintings as well as genre scenes and portraits. His patrons were mainly Amsterdam patricians, who used van den Eeckhout's works to decorate their private houses. The present panel depicting St. Luke is part of a series of Evengelists by van den Eeckhout.

DER ABSCHIED DES VERLORENEN SOHNES Öl auf Holz. 23,7 x 30 cm. Unten auf der rechten Seite undeutlich signiert. In tief profiliertem Holzrahmen. Nach Lk 15,11-32 erzählt der Maler, wie der Sohn, der sich soeben von seinem Vater sein Erbteil hat auszahlen lassen, auf dem Pferd in die Ferne zieht, um sein Geld zu verprassen. Die Darstellung ist in eine einerseits italienisierende Architektur verortet, die Kleidung ist rembrandesk orientalisierend. Das Grün in der Vegetation jedoch weist in die zweite Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts, sodass wir bei dem Maler unseres Gemäldes von einem Nachfolger Rembrandts, vielleicht von van den Eeckhout und seinem Umkreis, sprechen können. Provenienz: Auktion M. P. D. Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Companions Making Music Signed and dated lower left: G.v. Eeckhout fecit 1660Houbraken reports that Gebrandt van den Eeckhout was Rembrandt's favourite pupil and one of his best friends. He is not among the most well-known of this artist's students, like Ferdinand Bol or Govaert Flinck, but he was certainly a versatile artist, able to create both fine quality historic, biblical and mythological scenes as well as genre paintings and portraits. In the 1660s his oeuvre is marked by a sketchy style, noticeable in the present work painted in 1660. Sumowski sees this as a reaction to Rembrandt's loose and minimalistic later style. Eeckhout created a number of remarkable works in this manner, including "Vertumnus and Pomona" in the Indianapolis Museum or his self portrait from 1659, kept in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. 58 x 68 cm

Das Alte Testament (Richter 6, 11 bis 8, 35) erzählt die Geschichte Gideons, Sohn des Joasch, dem ein Engel des Herrn erschienen ist, als er Weizen ausschlug und ihn ermutigte, Israel vom Joch der Midianiter zu befreien. Nach dem Sieg über die Midianiter lebte Israel 40 Jahre in Frieden. In diesem Gemälde aus dem Frühwerk des Rembrandt-Schüler Gerbrand van den Eeckhout erkennt Sumowski sowohl den Einfluss Rembrandts im Helldunkel der Ausführung, wie auch Pieter Lastmans (1583-1633) in der Komposition. Lastman, der selbst für kurze Zeit Lehrer Rembrandts war und eine bedeutende Werkstatt in Amsterdam führte, gehörte zu einer in dieser Zeit entstehenden Gruppe von Künstlern, die sich jeweils auf eine bestimmte Bildgattung spezialiserten und ihre Werke auf dem freien Markt anboten. So widmeten sich Lastman und seine Schüler dem Studium der Komposition und des Erzählens von Historiengemälden. Der Entwurf für unser Gemälde sowie eine Alternativ-Skizze befinden sich im Braunschweiger Kupferstichkabinett (siehe Literatur). Van den Eeckhout griff die Thematik Gideons bekanntlich um die gleiche Zeit in einem weiteren Gemälde, heute im Nationalmuseum Stockholm, auf (Inv. Nr. NM 419).

Am Ufer eine große Menschenmenge, die der Predigt lauscht. Rechts ein geschweift hochziehender Balken mit Galgenkragen und einem Fischfanggitterkäfig an Seilen als sprechendes Symbol für den "reichen Fischfang", der in der Predigt thematisiert wird.
