        Jul. 09, 2024

Henry Edridge,  British 1768-1821-  Furness Abbey, Cumbria;  pencil and w

        Est: £600 - £800

Henry Edridge,  British 1768-1821-  Furness Abbey, Cumbria;  pencil and watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'H. Edridge 1814' (lower left), bears label for the John Booth Collection attached to the reverse of the frame, 31.5 x 44.8 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 24 September 1987, lot 182.  Published:  D. Thomas and I. Bennett, The Price Guide to English Watercolours 1750-1900, Antiques Collectors' Club, p. 155.  Note:  Edridge was a prominent watercolourist, principally known for his portraits, depicting well-known public figures such as Lord Nelson (1758-1805), William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806), and John Wesley (1703-1791).  Alongside his thriving career as a portraitist, Edridge also enjoyed painting landscapes, and the present work is an example of the artist's serene, romantic output in this genre. Edridge's landscapes in particular show the influence of the 'Monro School' of artists, with whom he was associated. This group of artists, which included Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), Thomas Hearne (1744-1817) and Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) often gathered at the home of prominent art collector and physician Dr. Thomas Monro (1759-1833), who is also depicted in a portrait by Edridge [Indianapolis Museum of Art, 1996.156].  The work presented here depicts the historic ruin of Furness Abbey in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, which, by the 15th century, was the second richest and most powerful Cistercian abbey after Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire.

        Jul. 19, 2023

Henry Edridge, ARA,  Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, 5th son of King George III, in Windsor Uniform with the Order of the Garter

        Est: £400 - £600

Henry Edridge, ARA,  British 1768-1821-  Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, 5th son of King George III, in Windsor Uniform with the Order of the Garter;  pencil and watercolour on paper, 33.5 x 24.4 cm.  Provenance:  with Andrew Clayton-Payne, London.  Private Collection, UK.   Note:  A preparatory study for Edridge's pencil and grey wash drawing, dating to 1802 and of similar dimensions, which is housed in the Royal Collection Trust [RCIN 913852] and which belongs to a large group of drawings there by Edridge, the prime versions of which were commissioned by George III. Several versions of the same portrait, with small variations, were made by Edridge, doubtless as a result of further royal commissions - see for example one which appeared at Christie's, London, 20 March 1984, lot 75. In this preparatory sketch, Prince Ernest is depicted wearing Windsor Uniform, a form of dress which was introduced by George III in 1779, comprising a tail coat of dark blue cloth with scarlet collar and cuffs. He also wears the insignia of the Order of the Garter.  As a young man Edridge was apprenticed to the portrait engraver William Pether (c.1739-1821). He later attended the Royal Academy Schools, and from 1786 he exhibited as a miniaturist at the Royal Academy. It is for small full-length portrait drawings that he is best known. These are as evocative of their period as are those by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) of sitters in early 19th-century France or Rome.

HENRY EDRIDGE, ARA (1769-1821) Colonel Coote Manningham of the Rifle Brigade, 1808 [and] Lieutenant Colonel Boyd Manningham of the 81st Foot A pair: both graphite and watercolor wash on paper, with touches of body color; the former signed and dated in llc: 'H. Edridge 1808'; each 16 1/2 x 11 5/8 in., on early 19th c. mounts, within original gilt, composition frames. Coote and Boyd Manningham were career British Army officers who both distinguished themselves in combat at the head of light infantry troops while serving in General Charles "No Flint" Grey's Expedition to the West Indies in 1793-95. Boyd, a captain in the 39th Foot, was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 81st Foot in 1794, but died while serving with his regiment in the Saint Dominique campaign. His younger brother Coote survived the battles and pestilence in the Caribbean and returned to England. Coote, a pioneer of British light infantry tactics, was the founder of the Experimental Rifle Corps in 1800 (which was later numbered the 95th Foot) and which eventually became known as The Rifle Brigade, one of the most famous and hardest-fighting regiments of the British Army. Coote's portrait Henry Edridge was made just prior to his departure on Sir John Moore's Expedition to Portugal and he is depicted wearing the green jacket with black facings that he designed for his corps.* His brother Boyd's posthumous portrait, probably done at the same time, was taken by Edridge from an earlier life portrait by an unknown artist done in the West Indies, c. 1794 (now in the Royal Green Jackets Museum at Winchester), which depicts him in a fort overlooking Port Royal Harbor, Martinique. Edridge was famous for his full-length portraits rendered in pencil and wash, but with highlights of watercolor, always exquisitely rendered in great detail despite their small size. This pair was almost certainly commissioned by the Manningham family, perhaps Coote himself. The battles and privations of Peninsula campaigning wrought havoc on this gallant officer's health. Manningham, now a major general, died at Maidstone, Kent on 26 August 1809 from a "severe illness, since his return from Spain." Provenance: by descent in the Manningham family until 2000. 2 pieces. *Lord Minto commissioned Edridge to make a copy of the Coote Manningham portrait, also signed and dated 1808, which was sold for L 10,000 pounds ($15,700) by Lowell Libson Ltd. of London in 2003.
