Signed lower right "Aug. Edouart fecit 1842" with a family name following which may read "Felton." Housed under glass in a period, likely original molded wooden frame. Dated 1842. 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" sight, 14 1/4" x 18 1/4" OA.

Full-length silhouette portrait of Reverend Charles Simeon (1759-1836), Evangelical leader and fellow of King's College, Cambridge, 1828, black scissor cut, full-length profile to left, showing a striding gentleman in a hat and long cloak, carrying an umbrella, signed and dated lower left, verso titled in ink 'Revd. Chas. Simeon', and with mounted printed advertising label: 'Likenesses in Profile executed by Mons. Edouart, who begs to observe, that his Likenesses are produced by the Scissors alone..., the expression of the Passions, and peculiarities of Character, are brought into action, in a style which has not hitherto been attempted by any other Artist. Numerous Proof Specimens may be seen at Mrs. Bays's Trinity-Street, Cambridge', 28 x 19.5cm (11 x 7 3/4 ins), attractive period maplewood veneer frame, glazed, with ink annotations to verso about the work and its provenance in the hand of A.N. L. Munby, and a presentation inscription at foot to Michael Jaffé dated 6 December 1964 QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Sir John Tresidder Sheppard (1881 - 1968), Provost of King's College, Cambridge, by 1956; by whom gifted to A.N.L. Munby, Librarian of King's College, Cambridge; by whom gifted in 1964 to Michael Jaffé (1923-1997), art historian and former director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. One of the most proficient silhouette artists of the nineteenth century, Auguste Edouart discovered his skill at paper cutting only after resigning his post in Napoleon's defeated army and moving to England in 1814. Sitters included the exiled French royal family of Charles X, the writer Sir Walter Scott and artist William Dyce, Fanny Brawne, the muse and fiancée of Keats, and many others. The National Portrait Gallery holds twenty-eight silhouettes by him.

          Auguste Amant Constant Fidèle Edouart (French, 1789-1861) A pair of silhouette group portraits depicting Managers of the Orphan Hospital, Edinburgh and The School Room of the Orphan Hospital, Edinburgh each signed and dated 1830 cut out silhouettes with pencil and watercolour the frames bearing the names of the managers and staff members 45 x 72cm Exhibited: 'Cut and Dried, the Silhouettes of Augustin Edouart', Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 2005-2006 Literature: Mrs Jackson, Ancestors in Silhouette, p.33 In 1727 Edinburgh merchant Andrew Gairdner set up a charitable subscription to raise funds for an orphan institution. The first Orphan Hospital took in 30 orphans in 1733 before a larger purpose-built hospital opened below North Bridge. In 1799 the Orphanage was moved to Leith to escape the industrialisation of the city.

E. Adam Note: A skilled portraitist who mastered the art of silhouette making, French-born Auguste Edouart initially began his career producing portraits from hair. After resigning from his position in Napoleon's army, Edouart travelled extensively around Europe and America where he developed his skill at free-hand paper cutting, producing life-like portraits in minutes. Edouart settled in Edinburgh for three years in 1829, producing around 5,000 silhouettes during this time.
