Ursula Edgcumbe (British, 1900-1985) Majorcan Conversation pencil h:23 w: 31 cm Other Notes: As the daughter of a father with artistic interests himself, Ursula Edgcumbe's inclination towards sculpture was encouraged from a young age. Before winning a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art in 1918, she worked with Welsh sculptor James Havard Thomas (1854 - 1921) in his studio. She studied at the Slade from 1918 until 1921 and, on completion of her course, turned from modelling to direct carving. Her work was much admired and, in 1922, she was commissioned to sculpt the granite group of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego for the war memorial in Zennor, Cornwall. She joined the National Society of Painters, Sculptors, Engravers and Potters when it was first established in 1929, and, as a member, she exhibited annually. Shortly before abandoning sculpture altogether in 1940, because of bad health and general disillusionment due to a dearth of commissions, Edgcumbe developed an interest in woodcarving. Edgcumbe's talent was wide-ranging: as well as sculpting and carving, she painted - indeed, during the war years, painting was her primary artistic interest.
